08 Sebring wheel bearing?

08 Sebring wheel bearing? - 10/29/12 12:53 AM

My wifes Sebring is making noise in the front end. It sounds like a bearing noise to me. It's not very noticable around town. It gets louder at 45mph and then goes away until around 70mph. Also, when you turn left, there is a thump thump thump noise that's coming from the right front.

It was way over due for a tire rotation so I just did that. The noise is still there. I didn't see anything out of the ordinary. I didn't feel anything loose in the front end.

Do these cars have wheel bearing problems? I'm leaning that way but the thump thump thump has me wondering if it's an axle shaft. There's 85,000 miles on the car.

raise up the suspected wheel, set it on stands and with one hand on the front strut spring rotate the wheel, listen for a growling noise as well as a vibe from the spring, also see if the front wheel will wiggle, grab the wheel at 9 and 3 oclock position see if the wheel will wiggle..and try it again at 12 and 6

sounds like a wheel bearing. turn 1 way noise gets louder, turn the other way noise somewhat goes away? You can have a noisy bearing without having any play in it. make sure the tires aren't chopped,/bumpy,or uneven on the inside tread. Also try hitting the brakes lightly, see if noise changes. sometimes a warped rotor will cause a thump, thump ,sound. The right wheel bearing usually goes bad first, it at the curb side, see's more puddles, bad road. But noises do travel,be open minded. If you take off the bearing, spin it slowly by hand, you will feel a bad spot if it's there. usually won't feel it on car, the mass of everything makes it spin easier.

I havn't watched the videos yet...

I swerved left and right and the noise stays the same. I checked for loose parts but didn't feel anything. Do these cars have steering wheel locks? With the keys out of the car, and the trans in park, the wheel will still move from lock to lock. That seems odd.

With the right wheel jacked up and turned left, I hear a noise but it sounds just like the pads lightly touching the rotors. I guess I can pull the caliper/pads and recheck.

The wifes PT had a bad left bearing. It had slop and made noise.Told her to get the bearing and Id replace it.The right had no play and you could hear the L making noise. She never got the bearing which all she had to do was tell our son as he works at a parts store. Finally about 2 weeks ago we were on the road and I thought the trans was coming out of the car.Pulled the left side and just for kicks as I thought I heard the R making noise that night.R side was still solid but when I removed the brakes it was noisy.Pulled it and it was worse inside than the loose L side.I tell her what the car needs but typical woman she waits and waits and waits.Rocky

It was the wheel bearing. The entire car rides a lot quiter and the thumping noise is gone. It was a very easy install too which it good.
