Flat pack voltage regulator question

I've had problems with two new Mopar voltage regulators. The first is the MP resto unit showing part # 3438150 in yellow text. That one works intermittently. The other was DOA when I purchased it, also showing part # 3438150, but in white text; the part # on the box is 77R06286.

I have a no-name parts store regulator on the car that works great; I just wanted one with the Mopar logo.

Both of the Mopar units are painted black, and I'm suspicious that these regulators need a good ground to operate properly, and that the black paint around the mounting holes is preveting proper operation. I especially don't want to scratch up the latter one to find out, as it is new enough that I can return it.

Do these newer Mopar units commonly fail? Is a chassis ground required on these regulators?

a ground is required for all the regulators to work.
don't scuff it where you can see.
scuff it under the bolt head and add a ground cable to that side. see if it helps.

It needs good ground to work,
remove it and scratch the backside then run a ground lead to it, then start the car and see if it now charges

The bolts that attach it to the firewall should have small serrated teeth on them to pierce the paint to get a ground connection

One of the magazines popped the old cover off and put it on the new one, but I can't duplicate it b/c the sizes are way off.

What they said, could hold it in your hand & plug in the connector and with a jumper from ground touch the alligator clip to the sharp edge of the ID of one of the mounting bolt holes & see if it charges & I'm confident it will but if not you will not have scraped any paint
