Headers needed for a 69 440 B-body

Headers needed for a 69 440 B-body - 11/15/08 03:31 AM

First, I did a search on this subject and nothing came up, second, I don't have 700.00 for TTI's.( I've already dumped 30K into this beast) What else fits on COLUMN shift autos brand wise. I have an existing pipe and muffler set up that is 2 1/2" before the Walker Super Hemi Turbo's from Summit and 2" tailpipes with CA turndowns. I can always change that later. Would it even be worth it to swap the Hi-po exhaust manifolds out for headers HP wise? Are shorty headers any good on these engines. The specs are 40 over 440 with stock pistons, 906's, Schneider 270H cam TQ carb, 727 GVOD, 3:91 SG. Car runs 15's if I'm lucky. Thanks

Dougs Headers are the best.

Headers are definetly worth the effort to bolt on. From my experience the hooker super comps make great power and are alot easier to put on than one of those el cheapo sets of headers. Just food for thought

I bought some from hedman (I think it was heman) a long time ago. I still have them in the box in fact. Headers are a PIA if you ask me. If you want me to check on them, PM me and I will. They were not expensive headers....maybe 150-200 bucks.

Hookers should work, Hedman too, they both should be about 200-300 depending on what model, or try the 1 3/4 summit cheapies for around 110 or so. Even a cheapie header is worth about 20 horse on a stock 440 and it will boost everywhere in the powerband. Your car should run low 14s, youve got a problem someplace. Check your timing and distributor curve. Is it a stock points dizzy? A stock HP 440 with 3.23s should run low 14s if its tuned decent. What are your cam specs? And what are the pistons stock for? Your TQ is bigger than the old AFB and AVS jugs too. Something is wrong someplace.

What does it 60 foot? Where are you shifting it? Are you just absolutely emulsifying the tires through the hole pass? Really a stock 440 with an HP cam, stock converter, decent aftermarket intake, and headers should run mid 13s on street tires with 3.91s.

Distributor has Pertronix in it, the intake is a Performer, the converter is a 2400 TCI. The run I believe was with the stock ASV from my 383 , the 1/8 I believe was 9.87. The pistons are cheap cast low compression, I usually shift at 6 grand. I was out beating on it tonight and the TQ was falling on it's face at high RPM I don't know much about racing but my friend Jeff Shaw does. I'm going to talk to him about it.

Well the TQ will need to be tuned properly then, but the AVS off a 383 is far too small. Even still, you should have been in the 14s.

First thing though, I couldnt find specs for a Sneider 270H but based on the 270 advertised it cant have more than 220@.050 and you should be shifting it around 5000 most likely. The low compression will slow it down, but youve got decent stall and youre not overcammed for any compression you can possibly have. Even if its 8:1 it should be capable of mid 14s. Whats your initial and total timing?

No. Not in my opinion. If the exhaust system is old, possibly replace it, or at least put 2.25 or 2.5" mufflers/tailpipes. As others suggest, maybe start looking for other tuning aspects to get the performance where it should be.

If you could get it to the track and get some actual ets and mph, the advise you receive will only get better. Well tuned exhaust manifold big blocks such as your can easly run in the 13s. When you get to that point, then I would consider headers.

I went through this about 2 years ago and came to the conclusion that Hedman Elite's were the next best thing to TTI's - at half the price.

Every brand will have its fans but when it boiled down to the features the Hedman Elites won me over. 1-3/4" tubes (1-7/8 would have been preferred), thick flanges, high temp coating, fit. These were the one's that had the fewest complaints of all as far as fitment.

Check to make sure they'll fit with your column auto.

They were $300+ from Mancini's.

You're right, the TTI's are way high. I dug deep and they were near $1,000 to the door. Got the ceramic/polished. It is noticably cooler under the hood, and I would do it again. It was worth digging deep in this case. The only thing Iwould do different is get them here from A-Z Nick instead of directly from TTI.
