Should I or shouldn't I ??

Should I or shouldn't I ?? - 11/15/08 02:04 AM

I have been trying to find another hood to put my Max Wedge scoop on but I am not having any luck. I did not want to cut this hood but when I really think about it once I put the scoop I don't think I will go back to the flat hood. So I am thinking about cutting this hood and mounting my scoop on it. But I would also have to cut the chrome mld that runs up the hood. So should I cut this hood or keep looking ?? Thanks , Ron

Sharp car......think I'd keep the hood un-cut in case I'd want to go back.

Keep looking for another hood.

My brother went through the same thing with his 68 olds cutlass. It's a one year only hood on a car that is relatively hard to find parts for. We ended up finding a guy who ran a junk yard in the northern part of the state who had one and he brought it down when he came to Boise to visit family.

I know a salvage yard that probably has one, but the price of the hood + the shipping to you would be a killer.

Well, I'm sure you've considered:

1. What it does to the value of the car.
2. The car's future (how long you intent to keep it)
3. How difficult it will be to replace it if you decide to you liked it better the way it was.
4. ...and how much better it will look with the scoop.

In the end, it's obviously your call. Write down all the pros and cons, and go with your gut. Like everything else, you'll have to live your decision...and your car.

Get a fiberglass hood, you can probobly buy one already set up for the scoop (??).

I personally wouldn't cut any original sheetmetal on a car that sweet.

Car looks great and I would keep it looking like it is and stay on the lookout for another hood. If you decide to save your $$$ and not change hoods at all a pair of american racing torque thrust mags on the front would look great

Look at the post at forabodiesonly.com topic "look what i found in a junkyard". Has pics of a 65 coronet, but looks like a 63 right next to it with a perfect hood. And its near Baltimore. Some place called Crazy Ray's? good luck.

Cut it. Do you really need a spare hood sitting around at your house? I've been through the same thing, and trust me, keeping spare original stuff just because you kinda feel a little guilty about cutting up the old stuff is just not worth it. From what I know of you Ron and looking at the rest of the car, I'm pretty sure if you added that scoop you would never go back to flat hood. After all, you've already got a cage in there, a hood scoop is small potatoes in comparisin.

I'd cut it. I don't have my car for an investment, I have it to have fun with, to cruise with and to race it once in awhile. If you're thinking of resale, don't cut it. Otherwise, if you plan on keeping it forever, so to speak, cut it, scoop it and enjoy it. Life is too short!

Re: Should I or shouldn't I ?? - 11/15/08 06:22 AM

I would cut it as once you put the scoop on you will not be going back to the flat stock hood. If you plan on selling it and are woried about it then look for another, but if that is not in your plans go for it as you already have everything you need. Plus it is already painted to match the rest of the car so to me the choice is clear. Do it as you will not regret it!

Re: Should I or shouldn't I ?? - 11/15/08 07:10 AM

i say don't cut it. original sheet metal will just get harder and harder to find as the days, years, go by. get a fiberglass hood, or just wait until one comes along, sooner or later it will.

of course, i cut out the old radiator support to put the 26" support in. oh well, so much for my own advice

Cut it, dont use the chrome IMO if possible. I think a scoop will make it look alot tougher, right now it has that long hood big car look like my Satellite does. I want an RO23 scoop for it.

don't cut ! as to the chrome spear, i "think" a savoy spear is 1/2 the length.

I can't remember aren't the 63 and 64 hood the same? I have 3 perfect 64 hoods.

kind of a neat hood wanted add.

Kinda cool hood for sale post too? I'll go ahead and myself so no one else has to. I'm sure this is wrong on so many levels. Ron fiberglass is probably the way to go...

Re: Should I or shouldn't I ?? - 11/15/08 03:20 PM

cut the hood and use the $$ saved to buy a quality scoop.

You would also need to locate a short hood spear and fill the holes on your hood (or some just shorten the stock one.)

Re: Should I or shouldn't I ?? - 11/15/08 03:22 PM

I faced the same decision with my hood. I waited until I found a clean, stock replacement in the event I had regrets ( to date, I don't). I've tried the fg hoods and they don't seem to fit real well. Lot of good comments both pro and con on this topic. Also, my engine is happier with the set-up I now have and I like the way it turned out. And I would not butcher your chrome center spear, there is surely a way around that.

Re: Should I or shouldn't I ?? - 11/15/08 05:01 PM

I would never cut a good hood again. I would buy the best quality bolt on fiberglass hood for those days (months), you want to have a more nostalgic race car look. Get a spare set of hinges with the light springs so the swap is quick and painless. Storing the spare hood properly may be the only dilema.

That's what I'm doing with my Challenger. The fiberglass molded in six pack scoop goes on when the car gets loaded with one of the bullet motors that actually needs the extra hood clearance.

My car will mainly see street duty as much as possible, so a common sense pump gas torque motor is the preference; but when the digger gets sold, the race engines will have to be used from time to time when the urge to race for a few consecutive months overwehlms me.

You have a very, very nice car, just as it is. Keeping it that way has a lot of merit and value.
The way I see it is like this: a lot of guys want to be with a [Edited by Moparts - Keep it clean] for a few hours, but how many can be married to her. You have a nice girl, with nice attributes, as I have read in many of your posts.

Re: Should I or shouldn't I ?? - 11/15/08 05:19 PM

I would keep the stock hood the way it is and
change over to a different hood for the scoop.
Fiberglass or steel whatever use a different
hood!!!

And, yes I agree on changing the front wheels
to something like a Torque Thrust D or something
close to it. Wheels make the car!!!

why do you want to put a hood scoop on? answer that question and I think you will have your answer.

Re: Should I or shouldn't I ?? - 11/15/08 11:59 PM

I'm going to vote for find a glass hood also.

My reasoning is, I had a spare, and cut it. I've never, gone back, but have thought about it, so I am glad I kept a good flat hood.

....BUT the reason I'm saying go glass, is the obvious weight thing, and I don't think I've ever seen a really top notch job of putting a scoop on. The all in one hoods are the better way to go IMHO. My scoop was built by a pretty reputable guy, and it has been a bit of a pita as far as cracks etc..

If I could do it again, I'd go with a glass hood.

Get a fiberglass one and sell the one that you have.

Re: Should I or shouldn't I ?? - 11/16/08 07:22 AM

First this is not a hood for sale or hood wanted add so lets get that straight.
Second is that I will never sell the car because it is the Mopar I have always wanted. It will go to my kids when I die. I will look into the price of a glass hood but I want a street glass hood that is strong enough for street driving. I appreciate all the replies as I am sure they will help me decide. Ron

Re: Should I or shouldn't I ?? - 11/16/08 07:28 AM

Yeah the chrome spear is the only piece I would remove/store. Cut the stock hood but locate a different spear to cut. That way if for whatever reason you do want to go back some day, you'll probably be able to find a decent hood, but finding a minty spear may not be as easy.
