How to locate a 4 speed hump in an A-body??? - 11/14/08 08:04 PM

I am installing a 4 speed setup in my 67 Dart sedan. It is stripped right now getting ready for paint and I would like to install the 4 speed hump. How do I locate it so it is in the exact right place?

The way I'm going to do it on my '73 Dart Sport is to first get the transmission bolted up and, from under the car, push the shifter up against the floor and mark the center of where the shifter hits the floor.
I'll locate the hump based on that.

The shifter does not come through the hole exactly centered either.... He is a pick of my 1969 Original 4-speed car.

That's how I did it on my '77 Aspen using a '73 A-body hump. I have some pics and a brief write-up on the process HERE , which will be very similar for an A-body.

I wouldn't be overly concerned about getting the hump perfectly postioned, as there was surely some variety from the factory from car to car. Once you set the hump in place and start opening up the hole, it will darn near locate itself.

Remember, you can always cut the opening larger...

With the trans in place, mark the floorboard and cut it just large enough so there is room to bolt the shifter and linkage to the trans. Once they are bolted in, you can set the hump loosely in position and figure out where it needs to be so that the hump fits the floor and the shifter can go into all gears w/o hitting the opening in the hump. Don't think you'll have a lot of leeway as to where to put it so the shifter actually works, but it won't hurt to make sure the hump clears the seat, too.

The hump pretty much centers itself on the tunnel. Lay it in place and trace the outline w/a magic marker. Trace another line approx. 1.5" inward from the original outline and cut away. Do not cut thru the structural support. It's a big hole but you need clearance for the 1-2, 3-4 shift rods as they are above the structural support and skewed towards the left. The rev. rod goes underneath the support. Mount the b/h, trans, shifter w/handle and lay the boot over the handle then on the hump. Mark your final location. The left rear of the hump DOES NOT seal properly to the floor as you can see in the pic so you need to patch it. I installed a repop'd hump. Weld every 2-3" in place and apply seam sealer on the top and bottom.

Looks great!!! You are right, as far as left and right, it centers itself. Its the front to rear im worried about. I would love to have the trans in it so I can use that but my car is stripped right now. Anybody have any measurements?

You could temporarily put the cross member in then bolt the trans to it to make sure its in the right place. Not as good as having the whole engine/trans in but I bet it would get it close enough.

Does anybody know the reason for the small bracket on the back top corner of the hump? I never did get a definite answer? Mine is a non-console car and it seems like the bracket will keep the carpet from sitting flat? I'm just wondering what's the purpose of it?

When I asked a few months ago I was told it was a forward limiting strap for bench seat cars.

As stated the hump really only fits in the correct place. I laid the hump in and sprayed black pain all around it and cut about 1/2" inside the line of paint.

I did the marker etc. I also have a 74 hump car in the drive way to peek at. They should tell you the repop hump is for the 75-76 cars.

Got mine from Dante's it fits good.

Only one MFR?

I have mine drilled to attach with caulking tube sized RTV and stainless screws. I painted the top satin black the bottom is bright white so it will reflect light for working under the car.
