How much HP/TQ can a 23 spline trans take?

Looking for a rough estimate on how much horsepower and torque can a freshly rebuilt 23 spline trans take on a weekend driver car that won't see much dragstrip use. Torque being a bigger factor in my case.

What first gear ratio and what tires?

My Dad's 23 spline has held up in his '70 challenger for 113,000 miles.

He bought it new and we pulled it out 3 years ago for a rebuild - it needed gaskets, seals, shift forks, and bearings. The gears were all fine.
the ATF that Mopar put in it was replaced with more ATF.

He runs 13.2 @104 inthe quarter on slicks and he used to tow a camper with it.

Don't know about gear ratio, just a typical 69 B body trans. Tires would be nitto 455's not the sticky ones.

How much torque? On street tires the tires will be the fuse, even with huge street tires it will probably take all you can throw at it. In 30 years of being in the Mopar hobby I've never seen one fail behind even the most serious street engine, at the strip on slicks it's a different story but even then failures related to the trans itself are pretty rare, 23 Spline, 18 Spline, regardless, A833's are tough!

My dad's RR weighs 3900+, runs 11.6 on slicks with a stock 23 spline unit. Many runs and has never broke a trans part in 40+ years.

My Dart is getting a 23 spline unit this winter.

Great thread! I did not know there was much in the way of rebuilding these. Are they easy to rebuild yourself? or is it best off to have somebody else do it? THe build cost of an a833 may be scary im afraid...

i did mine myself this past year with a little help from my dad and a engine guy with a good press. easy, just get the service manuals
