Anyone Know Pushbutton Trannies?

Anyone Know Pushbutton Trannies? - 09/23/12 04:20 AM

I put a 64 push button trans in a street rod and I have been trying to work out the bugs before I drive it. I have the car on jack stands and when I start it with the push button in neutral I can not get it to "center out"(my word) in neutral. I took the pan off and set the cable linkage to be perfectly in neutral on the neutral start switch. When I start the car it either turns the wheels in forward or I can change the adjusting wheel just one bolt hole and then it will run in reverse. There seems to be no true neutral. The spin is not much and I can stop it by dragging my hand on the tire with some pressure. It probably would not move the car setting on the ground but does this mean I have a leaking/ warped valve body or dragging in two gears? The trans was completely rebuilt by a experienced friend but it came out of a abused dead demo derby car. I originally tried the factory adjustment and that just does not work at all. I have not read about anyone having any luck setting them with the factory procedure.

I use the method that I adjust the cable so the pin on the cable will drop in with out pushing hard into the lever from the valve body in nuetral, 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear, it won't come out of the valve body lever all the way in reverse due to cable length. One bolt hole will make the difference between perfect and not perfect. Don't worry to much about the drive shaft turning in nuetral, not uncommon, especially on a fresh rebuld. Get it adjusted properly and go have fun

I'll second the comment about it turning in neutral, it's internal drag. If it were on the ground or the parking brake was on it wouldn't spin. Normal based on my 64 300's behavior.

Never test the functioning of an automatic trans while the car is on jackstands, the "windmilling" action of the released clutches will make the wheels turn....even in Neutral.

Thanks for the reply John, So how would you adjust this trans now? I am obviously pretty close, all the gears work. The wheels currently roll forward on the stands. I will get it off them but then what do I do? If the car creeps forward when in neutral do I just change the adj wheel a bolt hole at a time until it sits still? Or how do I know it is right?

Thanks everyone for the help.

The absolute best way to adjust the cable is to pull the pan and use a small inspection mirror to observe the position of the detent ball in each position.

Barring that, adjusting the cable so that the NSS contact is in the center of the hole in Neutral usually works OK. The factory recommended procedure has always worked for me.

You can't make a MVB with the modified aluminum transfer plate alone, you need a special steel separator plate.
