POWER STEERING Burping????

POWER STEERING Burping???? - 09/14/12 02:09 AM

Since getting my car back together I have a weird problem with my Power Steering.
It is burping itself out of the weep hole in the cap.
Is this a sign of a bigger problem?
Is it air that will work itself out?
I've driven it 10+ miles already so I don't believe it's air.
I had the steering box rebuilt by Steer and Gear and all new hoses and a complete flush out.

The one thing that is bothering me though is a previous butcher, I mean owner had a tiny screw in the hole of the cap so maybe this was an existing problem with this pump.

Any thoughts on this??? Oh it's the Saginaw Unit in a 70 GTX without cooler. Metal cap with built in dipstick style.
Thanks Ron

I'd jack the front end up, then turn the wheel lock to lock 10+ times. Add fluid if needed, then turn the engine on and do it again. After that all the air should be out of the system, and if it still burps, you have a different issue

If it's a new/rebuilt system, jack the ft wheels off the ground, run the engine, and turn the wheels rt & lt several times to burp the air out of the system. Might want to diaper the pump or draw some fluid out (a turkey-baster works well).
If the pump is overfilled, it will puke.

I did suck some fluid out yesterday but haven't driven it yet.
I'll try the lock to lock but like I said I have driven it over 10 miles already.

That screw being in the center of the cap has me thinking there is more to this though.

in your 10 miles of driving, did you turn the wheels lock to lock even once? I can't think of a street driving situation where one would do that.

you need to get the PS box to operate through it's entire range to get all the air out. and even then it takes several times because of bubbles that can stick to the sides of the passages.

plus the fluid can get aerated during the bleeding/burping process from the pump cavitating as it works out the air, and as the fluid mixes with the air when first pumped through the system. sometimes you have to turn lock to lock a bunch of times, then let it sit for 20 or 30 minutes to let all the air bubbles rise out of the fluid, then do it again.

Just wanted to Thank all that answered and give an update.

I got the car running again and did the lock to lock about 10-15 times, let the car get fully warm and checked the fluid.
I had to remove some more fluid, then did the lock to lock some more.
Today I got to drive it for about 20 miles with shutting it off in between for gas and what not.
No More Burping!!!!!!!!!!!

If you jack up the front end again, let the engine idle and see if the wheels turn right or left from straight ahead w/o touching the steering wheel. That can be adjusted at the gearbox by loosening the casting at the top where the hose attaches and tapping it forward or rearward. DON'T remove it, just loosen the bolts a little. It will weep PS fluid when loose.
