SB Fuel Pump Suggestions - 09/02/12 03:21 PM

I am currently shopping for a new mechanical fuel pump and I am looking for suggestions. The last two that I have used have been the Carter M6866, which seem to last 2-3 years.
I would like suggestions on other brands, or the nicer Carter units.
I am looking for 5.5-7psi units which do not require a regulator.

What about the higher priced Carters, MP, Edelbrock or Holley pumps? I don't mind raising the price from my current $33 Carter as long as I am getting a good unit.

ive always had pretty good luck with the carters.seems like ive had one fail.they are a good mech pump that will support 400 h.p..holley makes a good pump as well.

i see of your other post that you are replacing this pump.get the carter that you can replace the diaphram in . i think they used to be $70-80.it is a good pump.10 times the pump you are replacing

Mc,
I am currently leaning towards the Carter M6902, which has the replacable diaphram.

Thank you for the reply.

I am not sure how to explain this, but I am still using a stock replacement Autozone small block fuel pump that I've had for at least ten years and a couple of different engines. It probably shouldn't work, but it does. It has a 5/16 inlet and a 5/16 to 3/8 adapter on the outlet side. Fuel line is 3/8 except for a short section of 5/16 neoprene hose connecting the hard line to the fuel pump. I am also running a return line back to the tank. The return line is 1/4 in. with a .045 retricter. Both of the engines I've used it on make pretty good power, but somehow this cheap [ around $17.00 ] pump is able to supply the necessary fuel for a 3310 Holley up to at least 6500 rpm.

Me too, I used a cheap parts house Airtex? pump on a 360 SB (9:1/2bbl) circle burner (class rules-stock pump required) with 5/16" line and NO fuel starvation at 6200 RPM WOT though I am going to drill out the nipples to 3/8 & 3/8 line

this is the pump i would use. 3 valve and can be taken apart. the diaphragm is replaceable if you can find one. the mancini rebuild kits are junk!

The Carter 6866 was no doubt enough pump for my engine. The main factor is that I have gone thru 2 of them in about 5-6 years and I want to try another unit to see if I can get some more time out of it.
I have ordered the Carter 6902 from Mancini.

Thank you all for your replies.

The Edelbrock is the only one with 3/8" ports . whitch is 6AN size . Clay Smith still make a 1/2" (8AN) mechanical but some mods have to be done to use it.

I received and installed the Carter M6902 from Mancini last night. I noticed right off that the strength of the spring is much stronger than the spring on the Carter M6866 (one piece) unit that I pulled off.
The description of the M6902 pump shows 5.5-6.5psi but my mechanical gauge was showing 7psi plus/minus 1/2 or so. I was watching my float levels and they were right where I set them and my O2 gauges looked good, so the extra 1psi does not seem to bother my floats at idle.
I should be able to test drive it this weekend and hopefully this was the reason for my erratic lean conditions that developed out of no where.

Made In USA!

The 6902 shows up in the beginning of the casting part number on the flange.

The pump was the problem. I no longer have the lean issues and my A/F numbers are steady again.
Thanks for the suggestions!
