Engine weight

Engine weight - 08/30/12 09:13 AM

Not sure if this has been asked before, But I was wondering if you can get the weight of a 440 down to the weight of a stock small block. By changing to aluminum heads, intake, water pump and so on. Seems small block cars handle better without all the weight out front so just wondering if its possible and if anyone has weighed the difference. Thanks

Yes, it is fairly easy to do that. I covered the subject in my B-body book.

This big block only weighs 490 lbs. It could be made even lighter with a little more work (money).

This SB is 450 lbs, but it has aluminum heads and intake. It also has lightweight internals. A stock SB with all cast iron parts is about 550 lbs. Just depends if you include exhaust manifolds, flywheel, etc.

But bottom line, it is easy to build a BB engine that weighs less than a stone stock SB. A stroker big-block should be lighter than a stock big-block due to the lighter rotating assembly.

Could you provide weight for a HEMI? Stock,vs. Aluminum heads/waterpump vs. all aluminum? Also, what is the title of your book?
Thanks

Is the 490# bb as pictured or just the casting. I am trying to estimate freight and I have not a scale able to weigh that much.

I have heard that a stock 440 is only 50 lbs heavier than a stock slant six. Anybody know if it is true or not ?

I don't know about that. While slants are fat for what they are, stock front torsion bars on slant cars are MUCH less beefy that stock torsion bars on BB cars. I would say it's probably more like a slant would be near 50lbs to a stock SB.

This Hemi is 570 lbs. It is a 528 inch crate Hemi from Mopar Performance so it has aluminum heads and a dual plane intake.
