TBI swap to my 78 Fury.....?

What would it take and would there be any benefits to swapping from my Thermoquad on my Fury, to a factory TBI setup off of a pre-magnum truck? Ive been searching around and cant seem to find anything other than a complete Magnum "beer-barrel" conversion. Id like to have just a simple TBI setup...simply for the possible increase in fuel economy and reliability. My Fury is driven daily, and with gas prices the way they are, and my current level of boredom....I thought it might be an interesting idea.

I'm not sure, but I thought I heard most of the replacement parts for the pre-magnum EFI setup are obsolete. But if you decide to do it, the biggest issue would be taking your donor engine harness, finding a bulkhead connector pinout diagram for that setup and hacking out all of the engine control related parts of the engine harness and transferring them over to your fury. Not a huge deal, I've done it before on the carb/tbi/turbo mopar 4cyls out of the 80's. Biggest issue is finding the correct bulkhead connector pinout diagram. And if you don't have a full understanding of the chrysler EFI system before going into this, you sure as heck will when you're done. Also, don't forget you would have to transfer over ignition control to the computer as well. The factory TBI will not run without fully controlling the distributor as well.

Another option is to go with a base model megasquirt and if you're not overly concerned with performance, a narrow band O2 sensor would do it. Keep ignition system as-is and grab a TBI from a junkyard chevy 4.3/5.0/5.7L tbi and find a fuel pump that will work at that fuel pressure level(around 14psi IIRC). Could have everything for about 200 bucks. Would be performance limited just by the throttle body design, but a stock 318 is no ground pounder anyway. Plus help you learn a lot about efi.

That means, get a WBO2 sensor and figure out exactly what the current TQ is doing, and spend some time/money getting the advance curve sorted out in the distributor. There are probably quite a few ponies (and MPG's) sitting around doing nothing with the OEM fuel/spark systems. Upside to this option is that it woudln't cost much after you got the WBO2, and you need the WB to do any real tuning in the future.

if you want to go TBI, skip the mopar system and go straight to a setup off of a GM TBI vehicle, they're infinitely more tunable, parts are much easier to buy, or a hybrid of a GM TB and a megasquirt computer.

personally I'd start with clair's suggestion, I bet a well tuned t-quad will get as good or better mileage than a TBI setup, and even if you decide to go to TBI, a WB 02 setup will really help on dialing in the tuning of it, too.
