I removed the old one and installed the new but it wont release so I cant put the car in gear. Any help will be appriciated

Did you make sure the cable was connected by pulling out gently on the cable housing?
To adjust the cable, place the Park lever in the OFF position and have somebody hold it there; then pull out gently on the cable housing to its limit of travel and then tighten the clamp stud nut to no more than 10 inch lbs.
