Can someone recommend a good electric fuel pump?

Can someone recommend a good electric fuel pump? - 08/17/12 11:00 PM

I'm looking for a good quality electric fuel pump for a carbureated daily driver. One that isn't made in China (okay, maybe I'm asking for too much).

Any recommendations?

Carter's a good one & so is this Holley Gerator pump.

We have had the red Holley pump on my sons Dart since 1997. Its the one that does not require a seperate regulator. If a little noise dont bother you it works great but some dont like the noise. Ron

Holley Red is what I'd use.

Mallory 4110 pump doesn't need a regulator and would work good.

Ron. Hoping that the finances allow you to come up to E-town for the NSS trials. Would like to meet you and put a magnifying glass on that sleeper of yours.

I like running the Carter electric to the Carter mechanical, never run low on pressure or run too much pressure to need a regulator...

August 24th-25th. Basically next week end.
If the weather holds out, I feel a good turn out is possible.
I'm planning on running in the NSS AF/X class while fine tuning.

I here to help you, so please hear me out.
That fuel line setup won't work for you.I'm talking about the suction side only. The filter you have is very fine filter made for use after the pump, electric pump will cavatate on a warm day or under hi demand. Your line is too small also. I also don't see the need for a ball valve in the line, just more weight and another place for leaks. If the valve stem leaks on it it's gonna let air get to the pump and cause problems.

I would use a #10 Male AN fitting with a cone shaped screen stuck in the end for your fuel pump strainer. This fitting is #10 inlet flare X #10 male flare. If your cell is tapered pipe fittings the you use the pipe X #10 flare fitting. That fitting goes into the tank, then a #10 line to the fuel pump. Use a #10 AN fitting in the inlet of the fuel pump. The feed line should always be at least one size larger than the discharge.

If you have 2 #8 on the discharge of your cell then use one of them or better yet both of them tied into one #10 line.

Or even just a single #8 would be better than what you have now, bigger is better for the inlet side. Discharge could be 5/16" just about all the way up front, I'm only talking about the suction side.
Kinsler and others sell sell some real slick cone shaped strainers they go in between the male and female AN fitting to be used as a strainer if you can't get the strainer in the discharge fitting. Yours looks welded to the tank?

Fuel pumps need strainers in front of them and filters after them, there is a difference.

Always use a funnel with fine screen in the end for when you fill your fuel cell.
Just trying to save you some trouble.

Thanks man, that is helpful. I originally put this on just to take care of hot starting issues (and it worked perfectly), I have put a few good runs on it and it seems OK. But like you say it could help it to have more flow before the pump. I'll probably add that to my list of winter projects.

Cool, the fuel pump is perfectly located, close and below the sump and behind the fuel cell.
And being so close to the outlet helps a bunch and may even allow it to work for you most of the time the way it is.
But a non restricted flow of gas to your pump will make the pump last longer and operate quieter.
It will shorten the life of the pump at the very least the way it is now.

I went with an Aeromotive stealth 340. It mounts in the tank.

Did you have to go with a return regulator with your installation?
I would like to put a pump in my cell to make room for the new 3" tailpipes

Yes I had to use a return regulator and add a return line. I used my stock 3/8 supply line and added a -8 return. Mounted the pump in the stock tank with a surge box. Very clean install. I have 3" tailpipes also. I tried to upload a pic but it did not work

Also, never use rubber fuel line (except as a really short union) on the suction side of any pump and especially not in a bend. It will and collapse if it becomes weak. Also not being a jerk, just try to stop problems before they start.

Any pump can be fairly quiet (even my old loose and noisy holley blue). You just have to allow no metal to touch any other metal with out a moderately thick piece of rubber to isolate it. I have three layer on each of my mounting bolts and on the metal hanger plate also. Bolt rubber fuel pump hanger rubber plate rubber nut. Really helps quiet them down.

That being said some pumps are definitely quieter though.

You know Rick (Sunroof GTX) here on the website sells Firecore fuel pumps. I have his 140 pump on my 63 but you could talk to him and see what he has thats smaller then the 140. Ron

I had a Holley Red on my old Dart. I think it was a Red. Not sure anymore. It wasn't terribly loud.
