problem finding 71 Chally 4 wheel drum master cylinder - 08/11/12 12:21 AM

I've been having a problem finding the right master for my car. I received the 3rd one today and again, this one is for a disk car(large rear reservoir). This last one came directly from the factory and is p/n 10-1493m. Everywhere I find it on-line the picture is correct and looks like original with same size res, but that's not what is in the box. Summit's been great but they're saying maybe the wrong part came in the box(again?) and now the factory is out of stock. What is so difficult about this master? Nobody has them and oreily can't even get them. Any sources? Of course I broke an ear of the original. The casting numbers are 3461189 on my original one, and 3461137 on the new one.

Rock Auto lists reman and new options. I've got a "take off" master from a '70 drum/drum with PB. It worked when removed. If you want it for shipping cost, send a PM. Personally, I'd go the Rock Auto route.

Thanks for the link. It looks like the same issue though and I think it's because I have manual brakes that causing the problem. The Dorman M75817 was the second master I received and it had the same large rear res issue even though the description was right. What I got this time was the second 10-1493M and it also has the large rear res and it'd description is also correct. I called Napa again and they can't get them at all either. How can 2 manufacturer's have correct description and the wrong part? Maybe I'm gonna be stuck running this master. What would happen if I did?

Bomber,

The 71 Challenger 4 whl drum master is elusive to find thru various manufacturers, I've been in the same jamb trying to find this master...if you have a parts store that carries the Fenco line, which I find very good at supplying vintage/correct masters, Autozone, if avaliable in your area, carries the Fenco line...Fenco PN# M1323 or NAPA's TruStop line of new masters PN#10-1323, I'd recommend the Fenco line

The top lid and bale clip are slightly different than the original, if you still have your original cap and bale clip, they will swap over to the new master

Aaron, according to the website, the Fenco is in stock locally. If you can send a pic of the one you are replacing, I can go "hands-on" the one available here. Shoot me a PM, if you'd care to, to sort it out. You will NOT believe the price!!

Re: the fenco. The first master I started with was from my local Autozone. It had a bolt in the middle to hold the cap on, but the biggest issue I had(and it looks to be the same in the above pic) is that there was a tab on the mating surface to hold the piston in the master. To use that master, I'd need to trim the firewall for clearance. That didn't seem to me something I should need to do for a "replacement" part. Maybe I was wrong?

Aaron; the master you received with the bolt on cover (Fenco) using the 1323 number....all it takes is for a counter person to either look up the wrong part, or enter it in the system wrong, or pull what appears to be the "correct" part based on many variables...the bolt on cover design you received was Fenco PN#NM1323 had they pulled/ordered Fenco PN#M1323 you would have recieved the master I posted a pic of earlier...

Regarding the tab in the back of the master, IIRC the heavy duty reinforcement plate that fits between the master and the firewall, will have a slightly diamond shaped clearanced hole where the master's pedal rod travels thru, thus the tab and flush screw clear the plate and mount the master flush flush

Here's the Fenco Master NM1323 which is incorrect for your application, one letter added makes for different results

I'd consider the one on Ebay, but it is for POWER drum brakes and mine are MANUAL. I think that's the root of the problem. My re-enforcing plate has only a round cutout(hole).

Aaron generally I find that a master dosen't "know" whether it's power or manual from a mechanical point, it's just a master, power or not, it's still activated the same way...and I'd recommend you get a firewall reinforcement plate behind the master, as prolonged use will fracture the steel on the firewall around the master
