727's shifts suddenly a lot softer?

I noticed the shifts from my car are a lot softer than they used to be several weeks ago, even under power. 1-2-3 cruising is imperceptible, but even under WOT they're kind of wussy. Yes, I have checked and my linkage is at the full rear stop when my throttle is at WOT. I haven't run it low on fluid or anything. Only difference I can think of is that it's been a bit warmer around here lately. (Relatively speaking - like 70s-80s vs 60s)

It's got 107-110k on it, is it possible it just needs to have the pan dropped and the bands adjusted or something? It's not slipping or misbehaving otherwise, it's just different. It'd be super for cruising if it didn't also seem a bit soft under hard power.

How many miles since your last fluid, filter change? Maybe its time again??? Also, inspect your fluid. Does it look darker? Does it smell burnt?

Not sure when it was last changed, I've never done it myself but I've only put around 4,000 miles on it since I bought it. The fluid's always been a good cherry red color, still is. Smells almost like fresh fluid still.

I'd drop the pan and change the oil and the filter. Inspect the pan and filter for contamination. Cheapest and easist way to see if this might be causing the problem you're having.

Drove it for awhile in hot weather yesterday and noticed 2-3 is always a little better than 1-2, but it's kind of inconsistent. I have no idea what kind of fluid is in there save for the couple of quarts I've topped it up with over the last year and a half. Is there a "wrong" kind of fluid for these things that might have poorer friction characteristics in warmer weather? I've read everything from Dexron to 10W hydraulic fluid, I'm not sure what to put back in here when I drop the pan.

I use Dexron tranny fluid. Now I've been reading threads about people using Type F fluid which will give a firmer shift. Maybe you would want to research those threads and form your own opinion. Or you could try adjusting the throttle pressure linkage one way or the other and see if your shifting changes.

I've been using typr F for years in all my 904s & 727s and never had a fluid related failure.

I use b&m trick shift (car trans fluid w additives) in my stock harley primaries- that's the box with the 3row chain from the motor to the clutch basket with an oil bath. It really wakes up the clutches. I never used it in a car but Im thinking it would firm up the shifts some?

If the 23 is better than the 12 probably need the kickdown (front) band tighten up / set!

I just saw that thread from the guy who completely lost 2nd on his 904 and fixed it with a band adjustment - I'll take a red shower this weekend and tighten things up. I must have finally pulled some slack out of them with all of my 2nd gear decels off the highway in the interest of saving my can't-be-turned-again giant 11 inch drums. Since apparently Type F has friction modifiers I think I'll stick with Dexron in the interest of being nice to ye olde clutches.

While you have the pan off I would suggest you head to the local parts store and get a drain plug kit so you won't have to deal with the red shower anymore.
