Blow by of oil out of breather

Blow by of oil out of breather - 05/22/08 03:38 PM

I am experiencing small amounts of oil coming out of the breather on the valve cover of my 360. I assume it is from blow by. It only happens when I run the car real hard. The pcv is new and works. No other oil leaks. Can I run a hose to the right side header pipe and weld on a one way valve? I don`t like the mess of cleaning off the engine oil after a long drive. Mike

Maybe I should have posted this in the Raceonly section. Mike

Is there a baffle under the breather hole?

Do a search on PCV valve. I was having issues a week or so ago and someone responded with a Mr Gasket I think tech page on old style evacuation. Might do the trick for you.

If you are using a street type exhaust you will end up pressuring your crankcase instead of evacuation it. The evacs were designed for open headers where the exhaust gas exits rapidly and causes a slight vacuum. Mufflers/exhaust pipes interupt this process. Sounds to me like you have a ring seal problem that needs to be addressed. -Bob

I agree with Bob that you may have a ring seal problem, If thats the case it will only get worse. I had the same problem last summer.

I have friend with a very solid 383 with minimal miles that started doing that. He hasn't looked into it yet. I just wonder if there is a problem with rings seating in rebuilt engines that sit a lot? There also has to be an influence from high compression pistons as well.

anything unusual out the tailpipes???

My 340 GTS blew a head gasket up into the lifter valley once years ago. Blew smoke out one tail pipe (no H pipe), and puffed smoke out the oil fill/breather like a locomotive (puff puff puff)as well. Engine was fine, just the blown head gasket (no coolant leaks in this case).

No nothing out the tail pipes. Mike

Would it work with a one way diverter type valve? I have 3 inch exhaust and turndowns before the axles. Would that make any difference in getting it to work? Mike

I`m sure there is a ring seal problem but I like to use the car some this summer before the rebuild. Mike

I don't run pcv on my 66, just two breathers. I just beat on it a bit Sunday, excuse the pollen dust, if it's not real bad you can try a wristband around the breather when you race/beat on it till you tear it down..Pretty cheap and they catch the oil mist fairly well...

Use some old socks to wrao the breathers when you leave the house and enjoy the summer, when winter comes tear it down. Thats the route I took.
