door lock cylinders - Why is 65 B different ??? - 07/14/12 01:54 PM

Looking for door locks and ignbition cylinder for 65 coronet. Have bought 2 sets off here.....long story but have one working lock out of the 4 I have bought. Can't find 'em out there. Find lots of these, 1966 and newer. new and reasonable. This link is for a set on ebay, 1966. Anyone know if they will work on a 65 ?

65 locks are very different from 66-later. I don't know if they fit the same size hole or not, but I doubt it. I've got a pair of 65 door locks somewhere around here.

1962-1965 A & B body locks are completely different than 1966 and later door locks. Not only that, but the key blanks themselves do not interchange.

~65/66 was the changeover from the earlier larger rounded outside face locks (which you need) to the later smaller flat face locks which are in your eBay pic. Plus I think some or all of the earlier ones have the flat peened cover on the tumblers & either needs some carefull dremel work or take to a locksmith to get inside so you can clean the tumblers/pins/springs as it sounds like the ones you've come across are gummed up where as the later cyls have the chromed rectangular tumblem cover which is easily removeable. Once inside you can mix/match tumblers/pins on the later flat ones to rekey it to your key your self & I would think the earlier large rounded cover ones wouldn't be any different but accessing the peened cover is the problem. I have all my cars (2) working off of one key including the trunk and even if you dont have enough spare tumblers etc to match all of the key grooves and you leave one or more holes bare it's not problem as nobody picks locks anymore (except in the movies). Get your peened covers off & clean em up
