904 thrust washer choice

I need to replace the thrust washers in my 904 - I see CRT transmissions sells an aluminum and steel set, is there a preference to one or the other? I have excessive input shaft endplay and believe this contributed to thrust bearing failure in my 340 before, so I want to be extra sure everything is correct this time it goes together.
