best street/ strip torque converter. - 07/01/12 02:17 AM

Im in the market for a good street/ strip converter for my 71 340 roadrunner with a FAST legal 430 cu in. I have a stout 904 built for it also. Ill be running a 3.55 with G60-15's. I know there are some very reputable brands, but would like peoples personal experiences to help me decide. cost is also a factor also.. Ill list a poll with 2 brands I know will be mentioned. thanks!

My son and I both run Dynamic 9.5 street/strip converters and they work great in our cars. Ron

I have used an off-the-shelf Dynamic that worked good in my old setup, and I had Ultimate build me a custom converter for my new setup, and it works great, but it was more expensive. I'm not sure how price compares to other custom built converters?
Lenny, at Ultimate was great to work with, and built me a tight 9" converter for my street/strip Charger.
The converter works great on the street with almost no slippage until you really get into the throttle, then it flashes to around 5,000 RPM.
It is hard to say how it is doing at the strip? I think because it is tight, it does not seem to hit real hard on the launch, but that's good for my "street" car which is using stock leaf springs and E/T street tires.

Converter is one place not to go cheap on. It can make or brake your combo. I would talk to the other FAST guys and find out who they are using.

I realise that. thats why im not looking at 3-400 ones lol. I just want to see what other people are running for performance converters. its looking like between dynamic and ultimate..

So if you compare a stock or performance converter to a "purpose built" converter, where would you expect to see gains? The car would not 60 foot any better because it has no slicks on it [or would it?]

Would/should E.T. and/or MPH would increase?

Would a "true stock" car benefit from a "purpose built" converter? [no other changes}

[Yes I race my car, that is why I'm asking]

yes it would benefit because a converter is not just about launching hard. A good converter will pull harder through the whole 1/4. Its about efficiency. Cheap converters will also slip at high RPMS.

Maybe less important on a stock or mild car but theres still plenty of room for improvement there too.

my road runner never did this until I put the Dynamic converter in.....hooked up and put these tire marks as far as the road would let me. Before with the TCI it got to the darker marks where it went into 2nd and that was it, with the Dynamic it pulled and pulled I'm sure the Ultimate and a couple of others (even a good TCI) it would do the same, but I agree that a good torque converter is key to getting the most out of your car setup. BUY A GOOD ONE and don't buy price!

alright, I ended up calling dynamic and got one ordered. seems like they know what they are talking about and it was a little cheaper than ultimate converters ($699 compared to $890) thanks for everyone's insight!

I never hear Turbo Action's name tossed around here anymore. I picked up a 10" 17809ST from them last year and couldn't happier. My car still launches strong, but doesn't feel like a wet noodle at cruise as it did with the TCI.

Re: best street/ strip torque converter. - 07/13/12 01:19 AM

I just installed a custom built Dynamic 9-1/2" unit this spring. I was replacing an ACC "Boss Hogg" 11" unit that was rated @ 3200-3600. The new Dynamic unit is noticably looser down low, but seems to be more efficient at freeway speeds. Last weekend was my first time at the track with it, and I picked up 1.3 tenths in 60', and a solid 3 tenths in ET, before ending my night with a broken 8-3/4". So far, I'd say the converter Shaun spec'd for me is money well spent. I might have chosen to be not quite so loose down low for around town driving, but I did tell him it was "street driven", as opposed to a "street-car". Either way, I feel really good about the money I spent with them.

yes, https://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/show...e=0&fpart=1 I never ran the car with a different set up so I would have nothing to compare it to (ie other brands) I told the guy at dynamic that its a street/ strip car that will be driven on the street a little more than the strip. and also that the car will be mostly on bias-ply tires. he knew pretty much exactly what I needed I guess. maybe in a month ill know how well it works!

What ever you do, don't let price be your guide. I know that $$$ are hard to find, but a poorly spec'd converter or a price only converter can be your worst nightmare. Properly applied, they're great, poorly applied a bad, bad performance investment.
Your converter supplier should ask you a lot of questions before letting you know what is the RIGHT ONE FOR YOUR CAR!!.
I worked in the industry, and saw lots of fellows get the wrong converter for their particular application. I've attached a spec sheet we asked customers to fill out. BE TRUTHFUL about the information you're supplying and your converter supplier will get your the one you need.

Attached is a sheet that should help your supplier. BE HONEST with your specs.

I like my Turbo Action converter.

thanks for that attachment. I ended up going with dynamics. what I guess I meant is I dont want to jump on the most expensive one out there. if I can save 100 bucks and still have a very high quality converter, thats what I was looking for (unless that wasn't an option) I knew enough not to go for the $2-300 ones.. thanks though

We've used nothing but Turbo Action stuff since 1977.My signature says it all.

I have used Turbo Action converters over the years and they are very good converters. They always worked great for me. But with my 63 I went with Dynamic because they are very close to where I live and it was cheaper then the TA. I did not go cheap on the converter but sometimes if you can save a few bucks on a good deal and cash is tight it sure dont hurt. Ron
