/6 exhaust manifold cracked/ how to repair?or replace? - 06/26/12 01:15 AM
My slant six exhaust manifold has a crack and now an exhaust leak. I am guessing there is no way to weld it? And then I guess I have to find a replacement? Any other way to fix these?

Sure. They can be welded. You need to find a good shop the specializes in cast iron welding.

When you replace it, 10 ft.lbs. on the fasteners. This allows for thermal expansion, as in it slides around. If its over tightened, no movement, and it will crack. Check your FSM.

You can try to fix it, but it will crack again.
I get a lot of Slants given to me, and probably 2/3 or them have the manifold cracked, usually right next to where the center dump is, between 4 and 5. Some of them are broken in half.

I rarely get one anymore that is good. They normally get stripped off if they are good because people know that the only thing worth any money on a Slant is the manifolds.
Carbs are always a crap shoot too because most of them were junk when they were new.

Every cracked /6 and early 273 DS manifold I've seen is missing the brace that gets tossed when the starter is changed.

I don't know where your manifold crack is located, but you might try to patch it with Rutland furnace cement, available for less than 5 bucks at places like Home Depot. I used it to patch the cast iron elbow to exhaust manifold joint--elbow provides manifold heat to the carbs on the ram tubes on a Chrysler 300G with a 413. Sealed the crack, and after 2 years there's still no exhaust leak. The guy who told me about this trick also said that if you tried to use it as a "gasket" between two surfaces, you would have to use brute force or a torch to break the seal. Sounded good enough for me.This stuff is rated up to 2000 degrees; It might not work in your application but it never hurts to try the cheap way first.
