how to tell what heads I have by looking at them - 06/25/12 09:20 PM

Hi, I recently purchased a 67 Cuda with a 318 in it. I know it is a 318 as being under the car it was visible. As far as the owner knew the engine had a choppy cam and 360 heads. Well they werent very mechanically inclined and inturn the intake needs to be changed. It currently has a Edelbrock LD4B intake on it now. I want to replace it with a new Edelbrock but the two choices I see are a #2176 and #7176. The obvious is the #2176 as it works with all small blocks but is the less powerful. Plus it requires the newer style stat housing. But the #7176 is the more HP intake plus it usees my same stat housing.

Can someone more knowledgable please tell me if there is a way by looking at casting #'s for me to confirm what the previous owner told me that they are 360 heads so I can buy the better #7176 intake? I just dont want to buy the #7176 and not be able to use it:(.
Thank you ALL

Robert

Pull a valve cover and look at the casting number , also there is a big letter where the plugs are, what is it ?

John good idea. Here is what reads at the spark plugs.

On the back by spark plug at cylinder #8 reads either a 24 or 25. Hard to tell what it is but deffinitely one of those.

On the front of the D-side next to cylinder #1 is a giant 3. I wish they would have had a giant J as I think they are the best heads to have but can someone please tell me if these are in fact 360 heads? Thank you John and to everyone else for your helpful info:)

I pulled both sides. The casting numbers are very small and hard to read on the p-side. I couldnt make them all out. But the ones on the D-side were a bit easier to read. Here is what I believe them to be:

1. D-side 2843675 (I am pretty sure on those)
2. P-side #345876 or #345875 (The first digit isnt readable and the last is either a 6 or a 5.

Well the P-side doesnt show up at all. The driverside does and shows a 318 head. I guess it is the Edelbrock #2176 for now.:(
I am better to know before I buy. Thank you guys for your help:)

measure the intake port. if they are 7/8 x 1 7/8 they are 318s and I bet they are. if they are 1 x 2 they are 360 heads. if they do turn out to be 318s that LD4B intake is hard to beat.

Thanks shorty. The LD4B is whats on it now. But since the previous owner(s) stripped out both stat housing bolt holes and it seems to have a warped stat housing surface. Even if you tighten it down all the way it still leaks at the very back towards the carb:(.

Easy to put 2 heli-coils in and sand/file the mounting surface flat. Probably a warped thermostat housing, not a warped mounting surface though.

The previous owner did a poor job at installing two helicors. I think they drilled them out to large. Also I tried a new stat housing and the problem persisted.:(

With the rear gasket area (previous owner just tried to use sealant on the outside to fix leak) leaking oil I thought if I were going to pull to install a new gasket I would install a new intake to.

With an aluminum manifold, the bolt holes could be welded up and redrilled/tapped. You can check the mating surface by lightly running a fine file across it and see if there are high/low spots. If there are, file the surface flat. Could it be leaking around the poorly installed heli-coils and running toward the back?

I liked the LD340 I had... I'd spend the $$$ fixing that one over purchasing a different manifold unless you're looking for something that makes more power, like an air gap.

While your at it don't be in to much of a hurry to ditch that LD4B it;s a good intake...

Dibs on the LD4B! I got dibs!
That is a good manifold, might be worth a little repair work.

Actually Magnum heads are the best factory cast iron heads to have, in stock form

Dang I had no idea this manifold was so sought after. I will work with it a bit more before I ditch it. Glad I didnt go ahead and jump to the 2176. If this intake is such a great one why doesnt Edelbrock make them anymore? Thanks guys.

I've have one of these intakes on a 318 I have it it really works well, wakes that old 318 up. Great throttle response and power!! Also have a set of headers on the engine. Otherwise stock.
