From what I have been told, the VR-1 20W-50 in the silver bottle is a good off the shelf oil for use in above freezing temps. My understanding is that the other "Valvoline Racing" (non-VR1) oils in the black bottles are non-detergent oils. Their intent is that they are in the car for a short period of time, like a race weekend, then changed. Because they lack a detergent as part of the additive package, they have a very short life cycle on the street. The Porsche engine builder I spoke with thought you "might" get 1000-1400 miles out of it before he'd recommend changing it for sure. In general, he advised against using Racing Oils for a traditional 3000 mile drain interval.

Brad Penn brand also seems to be a name that keeps coming up as a good oil.

Up in the great white north I would go with VV850 in winter and VV851 in summer.

Just to be clear, those two are the black bottle non-detergent oils which are said to have a shorter drain interval. The bottles are marked "Not Street Legal"

i called their tech line and they said they do have sufficient quantities of both. drain interval in 3 months/ 3000 miles.

Yes. VR1 has the Zinc package with a detergent. Their web page specifically calls it out as OK for street use.

They separate what they call "conventional oil" from VR1 in the silver bottle here. The VR1 is still a dino oil. Here's the link. Valvoline Racing Oil Page

For a car with no converter, another good option if you can find it is a 15W-40 diesel oil that is rated CI. Stay away from the newer CJ diesel oils.

One more thing. If you've been running a non-detergent oil for an extended period of time, keep running it. Don't switch as the detergents will tend to put all the nasty stuff in suspension.

I sent in two samples (one new and one used) of Valvoline VR1 20w-50 racing oil for analysis at the local Caterpillar oil lab. This is thier SM rated oil, part number 211 that they claim has extra zinc.
Results for the new oil sample in ppm
Al-0 Ca-2121 Cr-0 Cu-0 Fe-1 Pb-0 Mg-21 Mo-0 P-1049 K-5 Si-4
Ag-1 Na-0 Sn-0 Zn-1182
The used oil sample had Zn-1172

The oil guy that talked to us the other night is big on oil analysis. His suggestion was to always send a control sample along with your current one, so you know what you are getting back. He gets good results from using Stavely for his analysis work. If you send a known second sample and it comes back vastly different from the first time, you know something may not be right, and you may need a retest.

When you look at the high reading for Ca, that must be the calcium as part of the detergent package.

Non detergent oils are no big deal in a hobby engine. I dont have the number handy, but I run the straight 30WT "not for street use" VR1. It costs me like $8/qt, and has zink over 1300ppm iirc.

My newly rebuilt 440 in the Coronet was very clean I thought. After running 15-40 Lubrication Engineers diesel oil, the rockers and top of the head is cleaner than I have ever seen in a motor. Everything looks like it has been cleaned with 0000 steel wool and penetrating oil.
