Need advice/info on a Hemi gen 3 install... - 06/24/12 02:39 PM

Trying to run some figures to see if its something I can do.
I want to install a 6.4 6 speed in a 71 barracuda convertible.
Would like to know what are the components needed and cost for each. And what does it take from crate to running/driving?

Thanks...

There are a number of companies that make swap kits for this combo.

Rather than ask Moparts to do your research for you I suggest you look at their offerings.

Just remember, doing the swap will be more difficult than researching the swap and Moparts can't do that for you too.

Not looking for anyone to do research for me, looking for people that have done this, what there experiences are, and general cost to what they have done...Like you said, there are a lot of companies offering swaps, looking for pros and cons....and Cost from people that have actually done this...

And asking for help and advise here, is part of my research

I've never done the conversion myself, but you might want to consider using a 6.1l instead of a 6.4l. First, because the 6.4l is fairly new so the engine itself will be considerably more expensive. Second, because getting the VVT functioning properly might be difficult. Finally, the 6.1l has been done before so there is more information and parts available for the swap.

Surely someone is offering a stand-alone computer for the 6.4L VCT Hemi? I would think so by now...?

Good luck on the project, please post updates after you get started!

I will, Maybe the 6.1 is the way to go...not sure...this is what Im trying to figure out. If I was to buy a used 6.1 drop out, what would I have to change for the install, oil pan?...ect....What else would I "HAVE" to have from the doner car?

There will be a phaser lock out kit for the 5.7 eagle and 6.4 soon, I would wait for that before making any large purchases.

I am doing a 6.1 into a b-body with factory efi. I did not try to scrape up used parts here and there (which I know can save some coin), but it will be somewhere between 8K and 20K depending on trans option you go with (which is where I spent a bunch to make sure I got what I wanted in the end)and how much do yourself and how long you can wait to find what you want. Everything with this is just like every other Mopar vs Ford vs Chevy project. The parts just plain cost more $$.

I have some info on my post titled srt 71 in members projects section.
You can buy 6.4 without MDS. Hotwire auto should have wiring. you will need a ECU/controller, and have that flashed to tune. mike@ostdyno.com can also give you insight on programming. It will end up costing more than you think

I'm in the process of organising a retro fit 6.1 into an A body.

Obvious conversion issues are:

Mounts - TTI seem to be the favourites, although Street and Performance make them also.

Oil filter - Known to foul on the K frame - figure on running an angle adapter or a remote adapter plate.

Sump - Front hump won't clear the K Frame so you need one of the conversion sumps from Milodon, Canton or Weldtech. (Don't forget the pick up)

Alternator - From what I've seen, the low position Alternator fits OK in the E Body...you have to clearance the frame with an early A body

Accessories - If you're not running air con or PS, you'll need the Idler pulley supplied by BPE or S&P.

Headers - Again TTI are the "go to" people..but i understand the front drivers side pipe may need peening to clear the PS pump.

Trans - Can't help with an aftermarket set up - for a Small Block 904/727 there's a flex plate adapter - mancini, TTI or S&P

Cooling - you'll need an electric fan set up and a radiator with inlet/outlet on the passenger side.

If you want to go carb induction, the MSD 6-Hemi ECU with harness will work fine.

Carb manifold you can choose the Indy Modman, the MP or the XV Single planes...

Other considerations include compatible sensors for the oil and fuel gauges you are running, clearance around your steering box...(R&P?), a "by wire" pedal unit, or use the 80 mm cable Throttle Body.

Thats about all I know at this stage.....
