What kind of rear axle in a '72 scamp

I am in the process of buying a '72 Scamp what size rear axle would be in the car. The car has a 318,auto and small bolt pattern..I went over the fender tag and it doesn't say ....I don't have the car so I can't see what it is 8 3/4or 71/4

Probably 7.25

You can tell easily because the 8 3/4 has a closed back with no bolts and also 3" axle tubes vs. the smaller tubes on the little rear.

I feel like the 8.25 wasn't offered until later, I don't actually know.

1 of the 2 you mentioned are the choices in that year. Look at the fender tag or under the car is the only way to find out.. Iv seen /6 cars with 8 3/4s and 318 cars with 7 1/4s..

The 8-1/4 replaced the 8-3/4 for model year 1973. All A body 8-1/4's were large bolt pattern.
