Can I remove 426 Hemi heads in car (70 Challenger)?

Can I remove 426 Hemi heads in car (70 Challenger)? - 06/08/12 09:32 PM

I developed a miss in #7 cylinder in my 426 hemi. I did a leak down and I'm leaking pretty badly from #7 intake valve.

I would like to pull both heads for further examination because I also found a slight bend in #6 intake pushrod.

Can I remove the heads from the engine while its in the car. I'm mulling over how to handle the head studs that are fastened with nuts inside the valley area.

I don't think I have clearance to remove the head with the stud in it. Can the stud easily be backed out from the valley area? Is there enough room to disengage it from the head that way?

Thanks in advance

Tom

Long answer: Yes! Assuming everything is in the stock location. You don’t need to worry about taking the valley studs off either. Passenger side is close though.

Good luck with finding your issue!

should come right out. If it gets close, try putting a wooden block under the oil pan and then lift the passenger side up a bit.

I know in our challenger there is no way the head on passenger side will come out with motor mount bolted and not sure even if it was undone and rocked over heck the valve cover wont even come off unless motor rocked over

Yes, it will come out..

plan on raising the engine on at least the passenger side, I would pull both side engine mount bolts..

Be prepared, wear a cup or your jewels may need to be repaired as well.. those Iron Hemi heads are heavy..I just got mine back from the machine shop...
Two people lift would be a good idea..

Thanks for the replies Gentleman. They came right out without any problem and without removing the head studs.

I didn't even have to raise the engine.

But boy were they heavy

Also, not really common with a street hemi build but if the block/heads have been studded (as opposed to stock head bolts)you cant pull the heads in the car.

Swap in a set of StageV's, that will fix the heavy issue.

Can be done, been there done that with a 472 HEMI with full head/rocker studs, passenger side does require undoing the mount and angling the engine over a bit to clear the shock tower,...done the same thing with a fully studded 472 HEMI in the 71-2 B body platform also,...PITA, but doable

I bet that's about the time you consider studs with allen holes in the ends...
