440 6-pack carb issues...help - 05/22/08 01:05 AM

Here is a pic of my six pack unit.

What hoses go to the ports that are not hooked up to anything in the second picture?

Also the engine seems to be flooding, the pressure gauge (see third pic) reads 10psi during cranking. Is this too high or too low?

Any ideas for why the engine is flooding?

Thanks

The big port goes to the middle size port on your three nipple valve cover breather. The little one on the metering block is for the ported vacuum advance.

6 to 7 psi max usually for a stock six pack.

The 10 lbs of fuel pressure comes to mind. Is the fuel pouring out of the top of the carbs or is the engine flooding? how is your float level?

I have found using the clear site plugs on the side of the fuel bowls are invaluable when it comes to setting float levels and carb tuning a holley knowing when you get a stuck needle and seat, regulate fuel pressure first, with fuel pump on(electric) or engine running if manual pump,I have found trickling fuel out of middle carb and half way up hole on outboards worked pretty good.I check rich or lean at idle by putting fingers over idle bleeds in middle carb.If idle rises lean, drops rich, may be backwards but would have to look thru my notes to make sure but plug the little tube with vacuum hose with a screw in it unless you have operable vacuum advance distributor then put hose to that.Big hose outlet I used to run to outside of valve cover with a fuel filter on it.Always got asked what that was for,(camaflouge) but my six pack had manual linkage and nothing original on it much left when I got it.It is as factory made it almost now.Need to look in archives for best tuning procedures, first you need to get holley rebuild kits if car is new to you and clean them thoroughly blowing out all passages and you will be miles ahead if is a new acquisition, there are experts like Cab to help you.Good luck,I too learned as i went and continue to do so.When in doubt ask,it is usually cheaper too.......

The small port, ported vacuum as mentioned above, goes to the vacuum advance unit on the distributor.

Holley carbs can only take 7.5 lbs. max pressure per Holley. 6-7 lbs. is where you want to be. If you are not going to use the ported vac, plug it.

How would I go about getting the fuel pressure down lower? It is a mechanical fuel pump driven off the engine.

Where would the adjustment be??

You`ll have to get a fuel regulator, your guage may not work right either.....

you have 2 choices about fuel pressure. either a pressure regulator or change the pump to one that delivers fuel at the pressure you require.

Big port should be connected to a PCV valve.
Small port is for the distributor vacuum advance.
Holley float needle and seat can only withstand 7psi pressure. You will need to buy a pressure regulator and set it to 7psi maximum. The high pressure will cause a flooding problem.

can anyone reccommend a good fuel pressure regulator?

heres a snapshot of my fuel pump, the fuel pressure gauge is pictured above in my inital post.

Where is the best place to mount it? Does anybody have any pictures of their mounting location?

The big port is the fuel bowl vent and should be plumbed into the original valve cover breather or you could attach a hose and plumb it up to vent into your air cleaner. I would get a Holley pressure regulator and plumb it into your fuel line between the pump and your distribution block, anywhere between is fine. I would also look into replacing the gauge as they don't always hold up too well in the engine compartment.

which holley gauge do you guys reccommend?

http://www.jegs.com/p/Holley/745059/10002/-1/10323

heres the holley fuel pressure regulators at jegs, is this the one I should get?

The Max Pressure regulator?? 4.5-9psi?
3/8" fittings.

How can I tell how big my fuel lines are?
