What Are We Using For Break-In Oil These Days? - 05/25/12 02:29 AM

I was going to use Rotella on my fresh build (PONTIAC! )

Any other suggestions? Purple Power?

New cam break-in I just use cheap wallmart oil & a bottle of whatever favorite additive. Then for under load driving on a new engine I'll drain the old cheap stuff and use Amsoil. Tight clearances 5w30, loose 15w-40. IF yours is a Pontiac 400 then straight 50 weight

by "purple power" I'll assume you meant "royal purple"? I have some killer degreaser/floor cleaner soap thats called purple power. I don't think that would make a very good break in oil, but it will wash away all your assembly lube in short order!

I wouldn't use the purple stuff, I believe it's all synthetic oil, and was not aware that the purple stuff came in a conventional oil?

I did run the purple synthetic in my flat tappet big block after break in on the engine dyno and 1000 street miles, never had a problem.

My newest cam (2 weeks) I used Delo 400 LE plus a bottle of the Comp cams break in additive. My previous cam, Rotella T with a bottle of the comp cams additive. These were medium to large hyrdaulic flat tappet cams with Edelbrock heads and springs.

I just broke mine in with the Brad Penn 30wt break-in oil with a bottle of the Comp Cams break-in lube additive. It went perfect.

Just a quick note, Wallmarts 'supertech' oil is just re-packaged Penzoil.. just alot cheaper. After a cam break-in, I change the oil/filter and check for contanements.. So I just don't see the point of using and expensive oil for a no-load cam break-in that I'm gonna change right after.

I used Comp Cams break in oil for the cam break in, changed it for more Comp Cams break in oil for the first 500 miles or so (as per the suggestion of someone on Comp Cams tech line), then changed it to Valvoline VR1 with some ZDDP additive. So far, so good.

Last two break-ins over the past year, I have used the Brad Penn 30wt oil made for this purpose, no need to add anything else to it.
