hughes 493 stroker & victor heads 440 - 05/24/12 01:18 AM

how much machining or grinding is needed to mod the block to accept this stroker kit and 1/2" oil pick up?

which victor heads or other aluminum ones should i run

engine is bored 30,considering a hughes whiplash cam,m1 intake,850 holley street hp carb,girdle(hughes),tti headers,2800 stahl,3:55 gears

looking to build a bullet proof street engine 550hp or so that will take a beatin easily

they have the 493 stroker kits with internal street balance and a "race" balance

what can i expect to pay for any block mods and assembly?

Is this a 4.15 stroke crank with Mopar rod journal sizes or with BB Chevy rod journal sizes? Either way it will depend on the rods to block clearances, if BB Chevy H beam cap screw rods probally none to very little by the oil pick up boss, if Mopar rod journal size and stock type rod bolts, not cap screw bolts, you'll have to notch the bottom of the cylinders as well as the oil pump pick up boss a lot more BTW, 550 HP is not hard to reach with a stock stroke pump gas 440 with the right heads, intake and carb and cam

I am using a .030 over 440 block for my 493 in my 63. I use a 440Source kit with the 4.15 crank and stock size Mopar rod journals. I am using the I beam rods and 1/2" oil pick-up. Everything actually cleared but it was very close at the oil pump pick-up tube boss where the tube threads into the block. I did some grinding on the boss on the block where the pick-up tube goes in to make extra room. Thats the only place that was tight (under .125) as it was about .065 until I made more clearence. Not even close enough anywhere else to even think about grinding. If I had gone with the Chevy journals it would have had more room. I just use the ARP main stud kit and steel billet caps. Had it alined bored also and I bought it balanced but had the machine shop check the crank as I checked the rest. As for heads you can use what ever you like depending on how you want your build to be. I built mine to run on 92 pump and I wanted to make enough power to put my 3700 lb 63 in the 10's on pump through the pipes. I used the Indy EZ heads since they have the stock location exh ports you can use any normal fitting header and dont have to worry about the raised exh ports. And the EZ heads use the stock type rockers. I run 10.6 comp with quench and it runs fine with a total of 38 degrees on my timing all in by 2000 rpm. I use a solid flat tappet cam and run the Indy dual plane intake with an 850 DP. I feel it could use more carb and go faster with more carb but I had to use what I had for now. Good luck with yours , Ron

thanks guys, details on their 493 stroker is on www.hughesengines.com

Dave at Hughes is suppose to be a mopar genius for setting up combos for your application. A guy i'm in contact with that has raced mopars for 27 yrs highly recommends these guys and their product so I have to respect his knowledge.I am greatful for any suggestions for a build since I'm still learning.Since i'm not a mechanic I'de like to build something very tough without a bunch of maintenance and bullet proof.I was told a solid lifter cam has quite a bit of adjusting as a regular maintenance thing.

I'm currently running a holley 850 street hp and a m1 single plane at around 475-500hp.727 ,2800 tci stall,shift kit,4:11 posi /742 case,but am changing to a 3:55 for more of a cruiser.

any suggestions are greatly appreciate
thanks again

They did a great job building my 493. I avoided the maxwedge ports to keep the port velocity up at lower rpm and went with a mild hydraulic roller. All I do is change the oil these days.

I did upgraded from 1.5 to 1 rockers to 1.6 to 1 T&D's after these tests. The motor really liked the extra lift etc and feels even stronger now.

It has great street manners, gets 12 mpg on the freeway at 70 mph with 3.54's(I burn street legal 100 octane unleaded from the local pumps) and a four speed(It's on the list for Jamie's 5-speed), and absolutely epitomizes a Dr Jekyl and Mr Hyde transformation when you go from the center carb to the outboards. Unbelievable!
