Bench Seat With aftermarket Floor shifter

Bench Seat With aftermarket Floor shifter - 05/15/12 07:49 PM

Anyone here have pics of bench seats that were notched to clear an aftermarket shifter? Would it be an enormous project or not so bad.. Really need to get rid of the column shift. Almost impossible to shift reliably/quickly for racing. Correct buckets are just way too expensive. People asking 700.00 for barely useable cores. byu the time you buy all the plastic parts/sliders / and upholstery and maybe seat buns, I'd have $1500-$1800 in them.. Or anyone use newer seats and have them upholstered to match the original back seat. I just replaced the back seat covers...Let's hear/see some suggestions....

I'm also contemplating cutting out the center and making it into two square buckets, modifying an original style bench seat cover to fit and match rear...

Anything is possible , swing by an upholstery shop and see what they can do.

See if the seats from a later model M body would work , or from a cordoba or magnum ...

I'm going to adapt the power seat track from a lebaron to fit a 69 A body and/or 69 B body.

If your tranny is setup properly why shift it? Put it in "D" for drag and go for it. The tranny will perform better and be more consistant by itself.. Besides the column shifter gives it more of a sleeper look.

Maybe he's got a manual valve body in it... ? Maybe he wants better control over when it shifts..
Maybe he wants to pretend it's a 4-speed, and do all the shifting whether it needs it or not...

The B&M ratchet shifter works well with both std and reverse valve bodies. The short throw allows you to put it close to the bench seat and not reach too far foward. This is my old 64 Plymouth. If I had to do it again in this car the shifter would be elevated on a small box to make it a little easier to reach (that is how we have it in our current 64 Dodge)

Ok. Do what I did in my 88 shorty. Slide the seat all the way forward then located the shifter. If your short armes get a mega shifter thats offered for pickups. It has a handle thats a bit taller. The mega shifter is a ratchet shifter that can be used in a forward or reverse pattern trans..

Contact onlineupholsteryandmore.com. I picked up two complete bucket seats that tilt and recline on newer frames that are very close to original bucket seats. He sells them for Coronets, Roadrunners, GTX, etx. I bought two complete seats and covers for the back seat for less than what you would pay to restore old seat frames. I added a Lokar floor mount shifter with mechanical linkage to replace my B&M ratchet shifter that the cable continually melted in traffic.

Sorry I can't figure out how to attach pictures but will gladly
Email some.
