Transmission fluid ? - 05/10/12 05:46 PM

Going to change the transmission fluid in my 2000 Dakota with automatic this weekend and was wondering how many quarts of fluid to buy ? Any brands to avoid or one that is best to use ? This is for a daily driver that just turned a 100k and shifts fine, no towing or heavy use. Will be changing the filter also if it helps.

8 quarts is usually in the ballpark range.

ATF+4 is a completely synthetic fluid so just make sure its got the licensing # on the bottle and you'll be fine. I have poured everything from Mopar to walmart branded atf+4 into our fleet and besides the price difference the bottle sure looked identical...

If you've got the 4.7 then make sure to get both filters for the RFE transmission. Most stores sell them as a packaged set but others sell them individually.

Got a 42rh, 46rh, and a 46re using walmart atf+4.

getting ready to service the 99 dodge with the 46re next weekend as it just came back from a 4000 mile trip towing a trailer with a car on it plus a truck bed full of household stuff..

Thanks guys, appreciate the information. The motor is a 3.9 so the trans should have 1 filter.
