Anyone know CNC costs? - 05/10/12 12:23 AM

I love my '67 dash, but I hate the gauges. I think it'd be fun to design a new gauge panel that closely mimics the original in shape and style but takes the gauges that I want. I have the ability to design it in a solid modelling program, but I have no idea what it'd cost for some CNC place to cut it out for me. Does anyone know what sort of prices I'd be looking at on that? I know it won't be cheap, but I'd like some general approximation before I begin all my measuring and modelling.

Most professional shops charge anywhere from 65-75/hour. Chances are good you don't need a cnc shop, but a fab shop. If its just pieces you want I can cnc them, but I need some overall dimensions to quote it.

There is a company in indiana called diamond P Industries that showed videos of using CNC to make a 6-71 blower and was willing to take programs and run them.lookup the co on youtube.He would be helpfull with info on rates.

I would assume the 67 Satellite listed in his post?....next question, assuming it's for the Sat, is what medium do you desire the finished product in? aluminum, Stainless, Steel, plastic, etc? as that will influence the machining costs, even if you supply the mat'l....most shops in my area get upwards of $100 per hr for one-off non production work

Internet machine shop - you give'em your drawing and they make if for you at a price, can't remember the name now.
About $300 I guess.

It's for the '67 Satellite. I'd prefer to do it in aluminum I think. See the picture. I'd like to relocate the wiper, light, and heater controls and fill the panel with 2 large gauges and 4 smaller ones. I want the whole face that the guages are set into set back into the panel the same way the original is. The shiny edge around the panel has a shape that I'd like to preserve. I'm not sure fabricating it is really viable.

Sorry the picture isn't very good. I just had to run out and take one quickly so you could maybe see what I'm talking about.

If it's possible to get it done, I'd probably want a glove box door too as all I can find are broken plastic ones that need restoration, though I haven't looked in 2-3 years.

The panel is about 22 x 5.25 x 5.25.

Having it 3D printed is an interesting idea, but then it'd basically be out of plastic and it'd have to cost WAAAAY less for me to want to make it out of plastic.

a hunk of aluminum for a part that large will be about $300-400 and then your talking about hours of machine time to hog it all out. if you want to preserve the dash, you can get an insert made for the back panel have it made with any gauge arrangement you want. thats what i did for my 74 satellite. i painted it black and it came out really good.

Just to make sure I understand what you're saying:

Cut out the back of what's there and get a new piece made for just that and attach it. Right?

How much am I looking at to send what I have someplace to get the plastic bits that are left restored?

When you says "hours of time" do you mean in the range of 4 hours, or 10 hours?

First you find a replacement.
Then you cut off the back with a bandsaw.
Then you fabricate an aluminum panelto replace the back, with holes for your chosen items.
Then you attach the back plate to the shell.
Then you stick it in the dash.

OR, fabricate the surround out of aluminum plate then weld the insert on the back.

Check out Street Rodder magazine, also Speedway Motors, there are lots of people making inserts. That dash is so deep you could maybe even space the insert closer and not have to cut the plastic.
