Gears for rear end? - 05/07/12 07:39 PM
My dads friend thought he had a set of 3.91 gears for my 72 charger, but he figured they would not go with my 12 bolt. So then he found a set of 3.55 gears in a 14 bolt out of a 73 road runner or satellight?
I am just seeking some clarity to figure out what a good set of gearing ratio would be suitable for my 72 charger. Curious who has used what and what they think of it?
thanks Josh K.

I like 3:55 for my street cars.

I have 3.55's in my wagon. 440/727. It is a good all around gear for street and some highway. I am turning about 3000rpm at 60 or so mph. 295-50/15 drive tires.

depends on how you're planning on driving it. If you plan on running it at the drag strip frequently, and not doing as much driving around town/highway.. then go for the 3.91's.
If you're looking for a good 'compromise' gear ratio, that will give you a good ratio for around town/highway driving as well as decent off-the-line performance, go with the 3.55's. That's what I've got in mine (not that I've ever driven it, but that's what I've got)

I think 3.55 works well with taller tires... 27-28". With tire diameter near original 25" or so 3.23 works better.
