Shifter/rods for 833OD into 69 RR w 440

Shifter/rods for 833OD into 69 RR w 440 - 10/27/08 01:39 PM

I bought a set of repop 69 RR shift rods (BEA) and these will not work, one rod is way to short. I made sure they aren't mixed up too. What set of rods should I be using when installing a hurst, pistol grip slip in style mechanism, shifter on a 833OD trans behind a 440. Is there a particular shift mechanism I should be using, or not be using?

And yes, I know these trans are weak, but I have 3 laying around and figured if one breaks I'll throw a new in while I'm saving $ for a Passon o/d.

The 1-2 rod will be the same , the reverse rod will be the same you will have to make something for the 3-4 rod OR put it on the normal way and change the shift pattern to 3rd down 4th up . That trans was not available in a B body so there is no known [Edited by Moparts - Keep it clean] rod ...

that I know of anyway

Some thoughts ...

The OD trannys are identical on the exterior to a standard A833 so I'm wondering if you're using the wrong shifter, wrong tailstock or wrong shifter location on the tailstock ????
Is the shifter in the neutral position?
Is the tranny in neutral?
Are all the levers on the tranny installed in the proper position?

There is a hole through all the shifter mechanisms in which to insert a pin or drill bit to hold the shifter in neutral while you install and adjust all the rods.

Can't see why there would be a difference between the shifter rod length between the A833 and A833OD. I use non OD A-body rods on a OD tranny with no issues.

If worest comes to worset cut the short rod and slip a piece of tubing over the ends to make up the needed length and weld it back together.

Two of the three rods work, I believe its the 3-4 rod that doesn't come close to lining up. I though about cutting and welding as my next step. I'm not sure what the shifter mechanisim I have came out of though. I'll try to get the # this eve.

The 3/4 rod is DIFFERENT on an an A body , if there was not a difference in length the factory would not have spent a penny to make a rod that is BENT DIFFERENTLY because the lever is pointing down instead of up .

You MIGHT be able to use a std 833 rod on an OD box but I know you can not use the OD 3-4 rod in a non OD position , I tried it when I broke the threaded end of my 3-4 rod , at least not without modifying something ...

I thought I read on here someone mentioning if you flip the 3-4 rod 180* it will change the shift pattern to the conventional style and make it so your non o/d rod will work, or at least be a lot closer to fitting correctly...?

It is bent differently to provide clearance to the cross member. The standard A-body 3/4 rod comes very close to the cross member but it does not touch and the length was fine.

I recently purchased a new Hurst Indy shifter for A-bodies that came with rods. The 1/2 and 3/4 rods in this kit had perfectly straight rods and they fit just fine too.

Can't imagine swinging an arc between the shifter lever and the up and down positions for the 3/4 lever is going to show a length variation more than a couple 1/8 of an inch which would easily be taken up with the adjustment.

Dave , I don't know what to say other than it wouldn't fit when I tried to put it on my trans.

You may want to give Jamie Passon a call. I think he can help you out.

Not all the shift levers on the side of the tranny are the same. Some have the slot horizontal with the sides of the lever and some have the slot at an angle. Some are stamped offset to move them away from the side cover. I have found many problems can be resolved by swapping the levers from another transmission.

Does the rod look like it will interfere with the crossmember/body or is it just too short?

If the slot is not vertical can it be flipped over?

I would look for a different shift lever. If not then you may just want to cut the rod and weld in a piece of steel rod to lengthen it.
