Hemi position tti question

Hemi position tti question - 04/19/12 02:30 AM

Anyone have a measurement from the k frame to the front of the oil pan? This is on a 70 e body mega parts hemi k and 21/8 tti hemi headers. The power steering box and # 1 tube are a no go I guess the engine could come forward but not much as the # 5 tube would be into the back of the steering box. There is about 3/4" on the drivers side of the front of oil pan and less on the pass side. Not ready to give up yet and start my big $ headers. The other side to side measurements all match what tti says, just need some front to back #'s.

i had to dimple my the #1 tube on mine/ I use a Hemispherical product k frame . I ended up using a 1/16" shim on the driver motor mount as well

I had the exact same combo in my Challenger. Had 1/8" clearance
from the tube to the power steering box & it would hit from
time to time if bolts shook loose. Fix was to get a Firm Feel
J body box w/ stage 2 setup. They shaved some off the housing &
emailed me pics. No problems after that.

I resorted to grinding/dressing the PS box, rather than hammer the TTI HEMI tubes, on the B/E application, it is tight fitting

I could grind some around the housing but the threaded adjuster with the jam nut hits also. Might talk to firm feel about a j body box also I already have a rebuilt ff box from steer &gear but if the later style box is smaller around the sector dome I guess i'll have to buy one. p.s. # 2 tube hits the idler arm also I think the pitman will clear but it's close. Thanks for the info I'm going to stay patient and make this happen without if I can.

I was using a Flam Riv close ratio box on my B Body and had to take a little off that for the headers to fit. Had huge problems with a PS b body. I swear that some of the motors sat too low from the factory. I also have also used shims on HEMIs. I wonder how anything worked on HEMI cars back then

If I can find a pic of the J body box, I'll post it.

I would like to see the picture of the j body box. I was looking again tonight and shimming the drivers side will be the difficult side. It looks like the engine could go up and forward 1/4" for the tube to clear the front of the steering box. The pass side could go back and up to clear the idler arm. Not sure how to shim the drivers side as the mount would have to be cut up to move forward.

I have played with shimming the steering box itself rearward. Take a U shaped shim ( body/front end shops have them or you might try the "HELP" section at Advance Auto) , loosen the bolts holding the box to the frame and slide a shim down over each bolt. Easy way to pick up a 1/16"- 1/8" ( + or -).

I even played with shimming just the bolt closest to the header. I did not notice any ill effects.

If you loosen the driver side motor mount ( the LONG bolt) and lift the motor by putting a block on the oil pan, you can slide a 1/16" piece of sheet metal between the frame mount and the motor mount. this will lift the header tube up slightly. These tricks may add up to what you need.

i have a 572 hemi in a 72 road runner with 2 1/4" tubes TTI's. i used 3 1/4" washers between the box and K member. everything fits now.
if you shim the gearbox make sure you shim the idler arm also. this will help with bump steer problems caused by the shimming of the gearbox. you will still have some but at least the geometry will be the same side to side.

That was my next try. shimming the steering box back a little. I just called ffi to ask dick if this would be a big no no sounds like it could help me but I didn't get to speak to him yet. I will try both of these suggestions this could add up to the 1/4 " I need at least My tube bashing would be minimal if I gain some. still interested in the late model box too. Thanks again for any and all info.
