Identifying BB 727 - 04/15/12 01:45 AM
A friend of mine has several 727's laying around and not sure what they were behind. How can I tell a BB trans from a SB or /6 trans?

The bell housing and where the starter mounts will be the most superficial way to tell.

also look on the drivers side, above the trans pan rail, there is a PK# stamped there....will id the year and engine the trans came from, also look for the 68 only VIN stamped on the top of the bellhousing, and the 69 andup VIN stamped on the pass side ID boss....I went to a guys house and he said take your pick of 727B trans for 100.00,grabbed 1,turned out it was a 71 440+6 trans...

look at the top 2 bolt holes. The BB trans holes are 6 1/2" apart.. The SB holes are 7 1/2" apart..

The bottom four bolt holes are the easiest way to tell, the BB has four equal size small holes and the SB has two small holes near the center with two larger outboard of them.

Thanks, JK! That's so easy I'll probably remember it.

Thanks guys. My buddy has 6 or 7 trans laying around. Now I can figure out which one I need to grab. He's got one that all the forward gears worked perfect, but reverse is gone. I know that one's a big block. It came out of a pickup with a 400. Guess I'd better get me a service manual.
