Lowered front end - Ebody - On bump stops

Lowered front end - Ebody - On bump stops - 10/26/08 12:26 AM

I've lowered my nose down some to help the look out and noticed that the lower control arm bump stops, are right about on the frame. Which is a bummer due to I have the right look.

What side effects could I expect if I shaved some off of the rubber stops?

Thanks!

First thing that happens is that there's no suspension travel on bumps; they'll tend to steer the car. Not good when cornering and you encounter bumps. Too low and the camber goes real negative. On nice roads, an inch of travel at the bump-stop area would be about minimum; that makes for more travel out where the tires are, but still not much.
A better way to accomplish the lowering would be with drop spindles.
As far as negative camber, I've run as much as -2 degrees with no problems, but that's a cornering setup; in a straight line it'll wear out the inner portion of the tread quicker.

thanks, actually I haven't really had any complaints for the ride. It didn't seem like it was bottomed out, thats for sure. I do have firmer shocks up front, so chopping some off the stop shouldn't be too bad of an option. I would not like to lower it anymore than it is since it rides pretty true with no tire wear concerns.

Energy and Prothane make some very short bump stops that will bolt in. Sounds like you might have some tall tires in the front?

do you have a link or part number for those? Sounds like what i need! I assume there is just a nut I can access through the lca to remove the stop, correct?

26" tall tires on the front.

Thanks

That's not that tall of a tire.

Drop spindles is the best way to go, but hard
to find for some cars.
On my 72 Challenger, I cut the factory bump stop
in half and set the arm a 1/2 inch away.
It looked real good a drove just fine after
the shop reset the front end.

Mine is pretty low also, do you have any pics. How much clearance do you have?

It will fit with 2" diameter. The lower contol arm just have a hole in the lower for the factory bushing. The poly doesnt have a square on the bolt, so you will have to hold the poly portion when you tighten it.

Might have a grind a little of the diameter is over 2 1/4" it might conflict with the flange on the LCA.

About an 1 1/2" to 1 1 5/8" with NO bumpstops.

That thing is low! Looked at my car, it's fairly close as well..may have to do the same with the stops. Any lower and I think my 255s would kiss the lip of the fenders with a hard turn

Ain't no thang.

I've ran into a mountain with it once.... Seriously.... went off course at Willow Springs and bent the valence, front bottom fender, and scraped the bottom of the bumper.

I should put something in there. Maybe slide in an old hard stick of Wrigley's spearment.

I'm as low as it can go. I've got the short poly bumpstops too.

At that height and those tall tires I think you should consider notching the frame. You've got to be much closer from the LCA to frame the I am.

I've got pics of a notched frame on a 70 Cuda. I helped the same guy do it to a 68 RR.

The distance from the LCA to the frame is a function of the body/frame height AND the front tire diameter.
