Did 1968 and 1969 440-4 used the Vac retard valve? - 10/24/08 07:33 PM
This would be the valve that I have seen on 1970 440-4 cars, that retard the timing under certain conditions. Were thes used on the 1968 or 1969 440-4 cars? Thanks.

I'll go out on a limb and say NO .
68 did have a valve , never seen it on a 440 , but it was not on the vac advance can and was not electric .

"In the day" 70-74, I was envolved in working on many of my and my friends cars, A,B, E body. I've never seen anything earlier than '70 with one of these. My 70 440sixpack came with an iron Prestolite dual point, and did not have the retard, either. A friend had a 70 375hp 440 GTX, which did, as i recalls

The '70 distributor had a retard solenoid incorporated into the vacuum advance which served the same purpose as the "green valve".

If you are talking about the C.A.P. Valve? Yes, all engines used them with California cars, I've seen them on non CA cars as well but I have not seen enough evidence to make a complete story on that. Here is a pic of a few different NOS units, from left to right: /6-318/383, center with the red bracket is for a 440 application, furthest to the right is a Hemi style.
