1972 Challenger R/T

1972 Challenger R/T - 03/27/12 11:46 PM

Until Saturday I would have sworn the last year for a Challenger R/T was 1971. But I was then shown a car with "documentation" to say there was a 1972 R/T. Am I the last one to find this out?

Apparently you're new to the Mopar community.

The Challenger in the picture is a Rallye...NOT an R/T as the
R/T name went away after '71 only to come back a few years later on the Aspen.

There are many publication that chronicle the history of the Dodge Challenger that would make for great reading.

LOL, Nope! More of a B-body guy, but a Mopar nut since 1977!

David, we have met several times, I was the Track Announcer at MATS back in '07 when you lost your wallet!

The reason I was questioning it, was he had paper work that says R/T, from Chrysler, and the serial number is JS.

I was also thinking there was only the Rallye, but this had me wondering. Its not like it is an early production car either.

I know, I was just being funny.

Anyway, that is clearly a typo/mistake from the factory, dealer or another source along the way. The '71 style stripes, painted bumper and T/A spoiler scream "clone/tribute...help". Not sayin' it doesn't look good, just sayin' it's not an R/T no matter how it's dress-up.

So, with that being said, you going to the MATS this year?

David, not this year. Apparently I was not needed for the announcing, and no one has asked me to work a booth. I will be announcing the Monster Mopar Weekends at St. Louis and Indy. I am also working tech at several of the NHRA Div 3 races again this summer. (till my car gets done)

This week/weekend I will be driving the 1964 Richard Petty Plymouth to New Orleans for a Mopar show there on Saturday. The car is owned by some of my friends in my area, and I am the "transportation coordinator". Seems I have the Diesel truck! LOL

The 1972 consumer information sheets do list R/T for the Challenger Rallye cars.

Why?

No clue why, they just do.

Also just for fun, take a close look at the grill in the image at http://www.hamtramck-historical.com/images/serviceHighlights/1972/1972%20sh%20p20.jpg

'72 would have had more of a strobe style stripe, wouldn't it?

FWIW, the 72 parts book shows a JS as a Rallye. The grille pic posted by Alaskan TA was interesting. Looks like perhaps there was some indecision whether to call it an R/T or Rallye.

It should have a metal piece on the fenders that the strobe stripes trail from.

So do all 72 Rallye Challengers list "R/T" on the consumer information sheets or just some?
