Hemi swap power steering pressure reduction - 03/26/12 05:26 PM

How does one go about modifying the original pump to reduce its pressure? I want to keep it. There must be a way. Its a 5.7 from a truck.

You have to run a GM pump of some sort. Google Street and Performance. It's an outfit in Arkansas that has done quite a few Hemi swaps, and they have got the power steering thing figured out. You can poke around their website and find how to make it work. Good luck.

There must be a way. I don't like the separate reservoir and the expense. I have read it can be done.

I'm sure I will be told it can't be done, however, I installed an '04 dodge truck 5.7 hemi in my 69 rr ragtop and used the power steering pump that came with the engine. I now have close to 8k miles of driving on this swap and have not had any issues with the power steering.

Are you talking about an older pump, i.e. 60s-70s?

I modified my 71 pump per one of the MOPAR mags.
It entails pulling out the valve on the back of the pump and adding a shim washer, (I used a brass washer that I had to file the O.D. a little) .030" thick if I remember correctly.

Haven't tried it yet, but it is supposed to reduce the boost to more acceptable levels.
It really is what MOPAR did by using the same pumps on smaller cars, (Valiant, Dart) with different shim packages.

I'll try to find out which mag it was, I have it somewhere.

No. The new hemi pumps put out nearly double the pressure of old. Or at least more than necessary

I used the power steering pump that was on the 5.7 engine. No problems with excessive pressure

I'm not sure how you'd do it without the seperate reservoir. Looking thru your vehicle list, I'm guessing this must be for the Warlock. There's no way a Mopar PS box will fit in an A-body with a 5.7 Hemi. If it is on the Warlock, and if you aren't going to run AC...you might be able to make a bracket to mount your existing PS pump where the AC pump sits on the truck Hemi. Sitting here thinking how that might look....I guess it might be at best! You might do like the other member above, and just run it. Seems to be working on his vehicle. Good luck.

It is for the warlock. And I do want to keep the a/c. Ill give it a try the way it is. The demon has standard steering box so no problems there.
