Stealth Head Flow vs pocket ported Iron - 03/22/12 04:04 AM
Do the stealths really flow that much more ootb than a typical set of pocket ported iron heads? I know 440source claims big numbers, but looking at flow numbers from the only reliable source I could find it looks like they really don't flow much more except for above .500 lift. Is this really the case?

If you took the stock heads, replaced the worn valve guides for 5/16" valve stems, cut the seats for dual springs, installed the larger 2.14/1.81 valves, installed hardened seats for unleaded fuel, and then put at least 10 hours of porting into the heads, then they might flow as well as the stealth or RPM heads, but they will still have the open chamber design, and weight alot more than the aluminum heads. If you put alot of porting work into the iron heads, they can even flow better than the out of the box aluminum heads, but if they crack or get damaged, they are harder to repair.

Currently the price to restore OEM iron heads to 100% stock approaches that of a new set of Stealths. Add in professional porting and the price will by far exceed that of a new set of Stealths and even a set of Edelbrocks.. Back in 1996ish a mopar mag featured Dick Landy Industries completely redoing some iron heads with oversize valves and a fantastic port and polish. The final cost BACK then was near 2 grand. That hand labor by a pro is $$$.

THANK YOU JOHN. I appreciate the advice guys but I'm not asking which is cost effective, I just want to know what the Stealth's actually flow out of the box, and they seem further off of the Eddys than I had first thought.

My guy with a flow bench got 244 OOTB on the stealths. I ported and polished them good not to the max but good and got 285. think he gets 268 ish on Eddy's OOTB.
A set of eddies I ported got 300.
I think 906/452's get about 220 stock!

The eddy vs 440source flow test fast68plymouth posted back when they first came out showed OOTB stealths to be about +/- 4% for intake flow cfm through the usual lift range. His opinion at the time was this was due to the source heads really needing the valve seat blended to the bowl.

Stealth vs factory 906 iron in different stages. The first two columns in each section are box stock and then pocket ported and then other columns are as the porting progressed. All flows tested on the same bench.
First the 906.
.100"....66.....78....86.....87....83.....72.....91
.200"...130...154...162...166...152...152...165
.300"...189...207...211...220...207...209...219
.400"...222...242...251...259...253...257...272
.500"...234...251...278...283...285...292...299
.600"...237...234...288...301...307...311...325
.700"...237...234...278...304...315...324...335
Now the Stealth
.100".....66....72.....88....83.....77....73
.200"...143...144...158...158...153...152
.300"...205...202...214...220...216...218
.400"...240...247...261...264...265...267
.500"...255...274...290...297...306...308
.600"...267...291...306...313...324...337
.700"...268...289...318...329...337...346
So to directly answer the question, the second column in the first section is pocket ported iron and the first column in the second section is box stock Stealth.

Rats, somebody is going to ask to compare the RPM to the Stealth. So here are the box stock RPM flows along with the fully ported flows.
