New build- ticking lifters - 03/22/12 02:59 AM
With the exhaust now on the 360 Magnum I can hear what sounds like a couple of lifters ticking on the left bank.
I thought at first it could be an exhaust leak but no leaks can be found. Remember this is a roller cam engine. Are there some things to try first to quiet them down?
There is now about 30 miles of street driving on the engine.

What did you set the lifter preload at?

Kasey,
The lifters are new from Hughes. I measured the original push rods and they were right on the correct factory length. The rockers were clean but of course they are used.

Happened to me too and the tick didnt go away. I replaced the right bank with another set of new lifters and havent heard one since. Are they on one side, all of them, one lifter or what?

This may sound silly, but as you were assembling these, did you go through at least 2-3 cycles of crank rotation? I wonder if the pushords happen to be hitting the head in the head passege somehow?
I did have this happen...I knew the fit was tight, but thought it was good enough. Not quite...after the initial start-up, I pulled the covers to find a good/deep scuff mark on one of the pushrods...it was enough to give it a good clatter though.

This is a '94 5.9 Magnum engine that came from the factory with a roller cam. There is no mixing and matching going on here.
I do remember a couple of lifters that seemed to ride in their bores a little tighter than the others. I took Emory cloth and smoothed the corners at the top and bottom of the bores. Maybe it was not enough.

We always suggest running at least 2 full turns of pre-load (about .080" ) on the Magnum hydraulic roller lifters. These lifters have about .180" of travel in them so there is plenty of room. If you don't have adjustable rockers I would try a little longer pushrod. We have found that less than .080" pre-load just about always has a slight tick. Good Luck!
