BB Distributor Phasing Modifications

I checked the phasing in my MP electronic ignition conversion distributor this evening by putting the motor on TDC and adjusting the reluctor wheel dead on the reluctor pick-up.

When I put my cap back on, the rotor appears to be half passed the #1 tower conductor (the rotor tip is half on and half off the brass tower conductor).

Also, I noticed that there is a lot of tolerance stack in the distributor. You can feel the distributor wiggle in the intermediate shaft slot and the rotor moves slightly on the shaft. Are there any mods I can do to fix this?

OOOORRR... Is there a better quality distributor that works with the Mopar ignition system?

Could this be the cause of my timing flickering ~1-2 degrees at idle? It cleans right up off idle and holds rock steady.

The vacuum advance is plugged off.

This thing is sloppy. I am not a fan of a sloppy distributor!

Rick Ehrenberg sells a modified distributor reluctor to fix that problem. It comes with very comprehensive instructions on how to dial it in perfect. I put in on my car that has stock MP electronic ignition and it fixed the misfire I was chasing forever. And dead on on timing as well. I looked but he doesn't have one listed right now on ebay. But keep an eye out he has his own ebay store that he usually has them listed.

I would like to find a few adjustable reluctors myself. Does anyone currently make them? I have not seen one for sale in a long time.

Simply replace it with a newer (firecore,petronics,FBO)dist that has no slop and a easier to set adv curve. I used one from FBO on my sixpack stroker and they set up the mec and vac adv to your combo (yes its a NEW dist NOT made by MP ) checked for out of phase on there dist machine. I just droped it in and set the total timing. It has a perfect curve and vac adv for my combo .

also reduce the dist shaft axial play to ~.005" by driving out the lower roll pin & sliding off the plastic collar and adding 1/2"ID flat washers above the collar then reinstall the roll pin. For rock steady timing need an added collar (Mcmaster-carr or others) on the lower dist shaft slotted tip to reduce it's rotational play in the inter shaft gear and a tight timing chain

I used to make adjustable reluctors. I used them several times to solve "weird" ignition problems in customer cars. Typically what would happen is that the tolerance stackup would get the rotor part way between towers and then the spark would jump one way or another.

I think I bought the last one that GregZ had at Carlisle some years back. Haven't used it, but am keeping it on hand for if/when I need to run an OEM-type distributor again.
