440 Source Water Pump and Housing - 03/16/12 05:14 PM

Hey Everyone,

Not on here posting very much, but always following and reading. Im in the process of freshening up a 400 out of my 78 Magnum. I have a question about how good the 440source aluminum water pump housings and water pumps are. I will be wanting the passenger side inlet housing. Any input would be great!

Thanks

Cam

There has been some moaning about the size of one of the passages on the "drivers side inlet" castings. I just hogged that passage out on the one I have as there's plenty of material in that area - it took all of ten minutes to do. Otherwise the casting is nice and fits fine. For the price you really can't beat it.

If they are still using the Cat water pump ??

It is a High Volume but only at higher RPM, not at idle where I needed it on my Challenger

Did the thermostat housing bolt spacing get corrected ?

Otherwise the OP really has no alternative choice if he wants something other than the stock iron housing .

Do what I did and get the Cat housing. I got it from KMJ performance $69 shipped. I used a stock replacement pump and thermostat housing from Napa. It all bolted up nicely with no leaks. I run it on 100 degree days in traffic and stay at 180.

Cheap China junk...
Internal passages too small, will make an engine run 20-30 degrees hotter...
Also the casting height is different from the OE Mopar aluminum one, forces one to use different spacers to get the proper fan belt/pulley alignment.

May work OK for a casual cruiser but dump it if one has built the motor and/or lives in a hot climate.

Just my $0.02...

Mine lined up perfect and cools my stroker motor just fine, all summer long.

Awesome...
Glad it worked fine for you..
How hot does it get in the summertime in Indiana?
We ran 1 for about a month on our 520 inch stroker, the temperature ran well about 210 degrees. Pulled it off, installed the Mopar OE water housing and temperature dropped 25 degrees..

We sold it for $25 @ last year's Spring Fling

Just my $0.02..

Had the same setup...I sold it last year brand spanking new for $100 because I didn't want to be a statistic....Do so at your own risk. I went balls out and got the real one from Mancini with the matching HV water pump

I've heard of several people running the smaller passage 440source housing with a good water pump. And it worked great. Seems the 440source pump is more of the problem than the housing.

The pump is the issue. I ran both the 440 Source housing and pump and ran hot at lights. Installed a Milodon HV pump and ran 20 deg cooler.

I read about the issues had with the 440source water pump and housing combo on here... I decided to get the waterpump kit from mancini that they have made, came with the pump, housing, and chrome water neck for $140. The motor hasn't been ran yet, but the passages are good sized and I like the looks of it

Yes, it was the pump not the housing. That's why I used the napa pump. I edited my last post. I got the housing from KMJ performance.

So who makes the best performing mechanical high volume water pump for big block chryslers? Is the aluminum water pump from Mopar Performance considered to be the best?

Had the 440 source houseing and there pump car ran over 210. Trashed the pump and installed a Milodon pump runs 185 all day now. Still a little hotter then it ran with stock houseing and stock pump. If i ever have to pull it apart again i'll hog out the pasages. They are half the size of OEM houseing.

Had a 440source pump and housing on my 511" stroker street engine and it always ran cool with lots of street miles on it. Including long highway cruises where insufficient water movement usually presents itself.
