Wagon fuel tank senders?

Wagon fuel tank senders? - 03/13/12 08:15 AM

I can't find out for sure if 66-67 B-body station wagons use different tanks and senders from sedans. I know there was some divergence in the 70s but I'm not sure if that goes back to the 60s. The sedans and wagons from 66-67 have the same wheelbase. Can I just buy a standard 5/16 unit for a 67 B sedan and have it work?

The tanks and senders are completely different. A wagon tank is inside the quarter panel while the sedan tank is under the trunk floor. As far as I know wagon tanks aren't available new.

You MAY be able to modify a sedan sender to work in a wagon tank if the lock ring size is the same, but it will need a much longer pick up tube and float arm.

The wagon tanks in 70s wagons might be in the quarter, but mine is in the middle behind the rear seats with the sender front and center. For all I know it's the same tank with the spare wheel depression as other B's but everyone seems to know later cars better than my generation, which makes this so hardto figure out.

My '69 B body wagon uses the same tank and sender as a '67 sedan. Not sure about your car though.

Look in my thread and compare my tank pictures to yours.

I took a peek again and I have this tank:

The sender installs at an angle that looks close to the other tank style but I don't know how it differs internally. It was at least a shared tank between 119" wheelbase sedans and wagons according to my '66 Plymouth electronic copy.

Well maybe not that EXACT tank, but the front mounting for the sending unit and pickup is the same. I think mine might be shorter. Garage was full when I looked so I couldn't pick up the rear for a full view. The front construction looks the same though - this new C-body tank looks the same as mine from the front:

Maybe the answer is just a C-body sender? I'll have to look more closely with the rear in the air.

Either way it looks like I'm lucky all I'm dealing with is sandy sediment and not giant rust chunks, new tanks for these things are expensive.

Hey, here's an eBay listing for C-body wagon sending units I just found. Is "CollectorsAutoSupply.com" any good?

I don't have a 67 parts book, but the 68 book I have says the tank is different from sedan to wagon in 68. The sender is also different.
Also, working from memory here, but I am pretty sure the C body tank is mounted in the left quarter panel, parts book doesn't show a wagon.

It seems to be different between the wagons and other body styles in '68 because the wagon is still using the '67 tank, which is the same for all body styles that year. The b-body wagon gas tank was in the quarter panel from '62-65 and then again from '71-up.

What I'm thinking I have here is a C-body sedan-style tank. The wheelbase on the wagon is the same as a Fury. I know for sure that it doesn't have the sender opening offset to the side. Either way it's a big fat rectangular tank that sits in between the rear rails just behind the axle with the outlet in the middle, it's not some weird suicide-canteen thing in the quarter panel.

Your tank should have a depression in it to clear the spare tire well in the back of the car.

See this older thread for pictures.

Ah you're right. I was confusingthe filler tube hole with the sender hole (though the sender hole looks angled the same as the C tanks). It looks like the regular 67 B sedan tank/sender is what I need too.

Yes, you're one of the lucky wagon owners that don't have a special gas tank and sender. I'm glad the tank and sender in my '64 are in good shape.
