360 la cam choice - 03/13/12 01:17 AM

I have a stock 1978 360 in my 71 dart. it runs nice. I'm looking to optimize what i have if possible with a cam change. presently drive train utilizes a performer intake, 700 holley vacc secondary, tti headers, 2000-2500 stall and 3:55 posi. compression 8.5. any cam suggestions would be appriciated.

Hughes 'whiplash' cam works with the lower comp ratio and sounds nasty but very street friendly to cruz around with.

would work nice with that combo. IMHO

I have used the lunati bracket master 292/292 in a combo very close to yours with good results also.

I like the whiplash much better though.

The Hughes HEH1523AL is a good performing cam for a mild engine. I have it in the 360 that I built for my RamCharger 4x4.

If the Hughes cam/lifters are too pricey, the Lunati Voodoo 60401LK would be a good cam, for about $100 less. With your low compression and stock heads it may even be a better choice since it is slightly shorter duration.

The cams above will perform well with a near stock idle. Good low/mid range power from about 1,000-5,000 RPM. These cams are easy to live with in a daily driver.

If your looking more for a hot street/strip cam, then you may want a slightly hotter cam. The larger of a cam you go with, the more the low end torque will fall off unless you do something to increase the compression ratio.
