Tuning issues - 03/11/12 04:48 AM

I have a ping in my new 440 that I can't get rid of. The motor is a 440 with 452 peanut plug heads, 1-7/8 headers, 800 Holley, RPM intake,Hughes whiplash cam,Champion V59YC plugs, stock dist with mod ( but stock springs )MSD 6 AL and Blaster 2 coil

I have my initial timing down to 12 and total at 32 my primary jets are up to 79 and 81 secondary 6.5 power valve. I think the plugs I have are as cold as I can get I had to go to a racing plug to get the cold ones I have. At first I thought it was my plugs being too hot the colder plugs helped a little but I still have the ping. I think my jets are way too big but I was tinking that it was a lean ping so I was adding fuel to it but now I'm not sure. It runs pretty good but this ping sucks

What is the in gear idle vacuum?

and when does it ping under real light throttle acceleration.

vacuum advance is disconnected

In gear vacuum is 11 I will double check this in the morning when I can start it without upsetting my neighbors.

it's pinging at about half throttle on maedium to heavy acceleration

What rpm is it pinging at during the medium accel?

You said stock springs (1 heavy with a long elongated loop + a light spring). I believe you need more octane. your timing is retarded, plugs are cold, jets are way rich, no extra vac adv timing: there's nothing much else you can alter

Re: Tuning issues - 03/11/12 03:50 PM

I don't have a tach in this car so I have to guess that the pinging is in the 2,500 to 3,000 range I'm running 91 octane pure gas ( no corn ) My altitude is 3,200 ft. I'm going to retard the timing way back ( 6 or 8) and see if I can get it to stop pinging or see if it at least gets a little better. I will be about an hour and let you guys know what it did.

I think I might try a 7.5 or even an 8.5 power valve.

Does it go idle to shift at full throttle without ping??

Re: Tuning issues - 03/11/12 05:38 PM

I took out 5 degrees of timing and the ping is gone .... Maybe my damper slipped. I got on it pretty good and about a mile later it started running like real crap on the way home like it was running on half the cylinders. It didn't make any odd noises and no smoke it's just running like crap. It looks like I have another problem to solve.

The secondaries are pouring fuel at idle. The needle valve is screwed just about all the way in and I still have fuel coming out of the sight hole. This is the first time I really got on it with the secondaries open for more than a split second.

Re: Tuning issues - 03/11/12 06:54 PM

The float is bent and once you go past center it just holds the needle open.
You will have to take the bowl off back the adjustment off bend or replace the float and start all over!

Did you put quench pad pistons in it? What's the piston to head clearance?
