Anyone try Bare Metal Foil for chrome plate repairs? - 03/05/12 01:41 AM
Anyone try this and like it? Or does it look like a piece of tape?

Works good on model cars. I'd bet it would work in small areas as well.

I've used that stuff on models before. You'd want to use a stronger adhesive like 3M Super 77 and get the edges protected with a wax or something, it's convincing on a small scale but definitely not weather-grade. It should work well on interior dash chrome.

I thought they have vinyl wrap now that looks like chrome?

I used it on my dash bezels. Looks a lot better than silver/chrome paint.

chromedome426, there are a number of responses. What did you use? The Bare Metal Foil? If so, that's exactly what I want.

I used percisely the HobbyTown bare metal foil in your photo to 'freshen up' a small part in my instrument cluster.
There was some leftover old chrome plating on the plastic piece, but I scotchbrited it smooth and cleaned with alcohol before applying the foil. It looked fabulous for 3 months, now the underlying old plating I left on the part is delaminating under the new baremetal foil and telescoping through it.
Advice: I think it would work, but get rid of ALL the old plating and apply only to a fresh surface.
Best, -Art

I used it on about 80% of my 68 dash refresh....I'm too fat fingered to get it around the turn signal bezels. stuff works very well for what is....on something larger than dash bezels, NO WAY. not unless you sanded what's underneath with a magnifying glass and a micrometer. This stuff picks up even the slightest imperfection under it because its super super thin...which is why it conforms so well and works so well on small pieces.
bare metal foil dash restoI used exact same stuff you posted.

finished product. Not what you would get from a pro, but for a driver, more than presentable.
