small block guru's help 340/360????'s - 10/21/08 06:06 PM

i have a set of .030 pistons laying around for a 340, is it possable to bore a 360 block .070 and use them in the 360?

if so what other parts does it take.

i'm thinking no but thought i would ask.

Thanks

Shane

depends on the compression height of the pistons...the low compression 340 pistons can be milled to fit...but you will have a high compression 360 then...

also...the 360 block will need to be sonic checked before boring .070..

it would be far easier to sell the 340 pistons and buy the correct 360 pistons...

As AARcuda has said it depends on the type of piston and the compression height. Also the cylinder head type, combustion chamber may be a factor(what heads are you using).I always go for the minimum over-bore on a factory block to keep the walls as thick as possible and would not even consider going that far.Even if the sonic checked out the minimum oversize allows re-building in the future.

the 340 pistons i have are the trw L2322F they have quite a dome on them. out of curiosity will they stick out of the bore too far or be too far in the hole.

thanks

360 takes a shorter piston than the other LA engines due to the longer staoke and same length rods, so a 340 domed piston will stick out of the bore.

so a 340 domed piston will stick out of the bore.

stroke difference is .270" so the(340) pistons will be .135" higher in the bore & diff pistons have diff compression heights but those will undoubtedly be way too tall.
