6 qt Mopar Oil Pan ?????

6 qt Mopar Oil Pan ????? - 02/28/12 09:46 PM

Bare with my thought process on this and tell me where I'm going wrong.

I have a built 383/438 ci engine for my ’68 RR. I had purchased the Mopar 6qt oil pan. Part # P5007807AB. In the Mopar Performance Catalog the description is as follows:

“Oil Pan, Six-quart, Center Sump, Stock Style, Must Use Oil Pickup P5007848, Stamped”

As I understand the catalog description, the pan holds 6 quarts and an additional quart for the filter.

Also, in my anal thinking, since I am using my stock dip stick the additional 2 quarts of oil, in what I presume to be a larger capacity pan based upon the description, the fill line on the dipstick should be relatively close the same level as my original 4 qt pan, meaning the surface of the oil level should be close to the same. No????

Well noooooo!!! When I have added 5 quarts to the pan the dipstick shows slightly overfull, let alone where the level is with 6 quarts. After I had added a total of 7 quarts, 6 in the pan 1 in the filter, I fired up the engine and while running checked the oil to see if it was frothy indicating my crank was slapping the oil. It was not. I have now marked my dipstick to where the oil level is and am using that as my full line.

Your thoughts?

Thanks

Frank

Savoy1964
Jim,

Here's a link. Not the exact catalog I got mine from but it's still listed as a 6 qt.

Maybe misprint .... ???
Mopar Catalog

lewtot184,

6 in the pan and 1 in the filter ???

Frank

EDIT:

DUH !!

After a little more research, Here is additional info:

From one of the catalogs:
Listed quart capacity is with filter installed

That answers a few questions. Apologies to Savoy 1964. You were right. Why did I doubt you ????

Thanks again to all.

If you want the six quart stock oil pan like the 1970-71 Street Hemi /440-6 pak oil pan buy it from moparts or Hughes or Mancini and use the stock 440-6 pak 3/8 pick up I use them on all my BB now, haven't done a 1965 or earleir BB in a lot of yesr, maybe I'll do one later this year I wonder if the pan you bought is the Repo 1966 to 1969 Street Hemi oil pan? I use to use them on my 1963 M.W. stocker

that pan is yet to be available in repop.

The 6qt pan is 5 plus the filter ... I would go by the old distck , full is full , a little over won't hurt much .

I've been looking for this pan. Mopar dealer says dis-continued. Does anyone know if it has been re-popped yet ?

Milodon makes a repo Hemi pan.

the 971 isn't the same as the hemi pan. lots of repo hemi pans out there. The 971 from what I understand holds 5 qts, look similar to the 402 pan, not as deep as the hemi pan which holds another qt. seems to be some confusion in descriptions on capacity.

Nothing special about the 971 pan. Pioneer makes one that doesn't have "971" stamped on it though.

looks like a generic replacement.

I always ran my "6 quart" Hemi pan with 5-5 1/2 quarts in the pan for the reason you mentioned. I did not want higher oil level. I think the 6 quart rating is a bit of a stretch.

My suggestion, run it with similar oil level as your previous pan and have fun.

Either Hughes or Mancini sells both the 1966/1969 and the 1970/71 repop Hemi oil pans up scope
The early street Hemi pan was 5 quart plus one for the oil filter, the 1970/71 Street Hemi and 440 6 pack oil pan is six quarts in the pan and one for the oil filter up scope
That one, 1970/71, is way better for the 1966 to 1971 B and E body cars with BB and Hemi motors in them up twocents

This is somewhat off-topic, but irregardless of what pan is on an engine, is it true that the oil level relative to the rotating assembly is always the same ? I would think so.

Re: 6 qt Mopar Oil Pan ????? - 08/28/17 07:46 PM

That's a generalization that cannot be made. There are two factors at work here. First it is generally desirable to have the oil surface as far from the rotating parts as possible. For example there are dyno pans that are enormously deep. Second the underside of the oil pan can't hang too low or it will be damaged and maybe take the engine along with it. So with the engine a fixed distance from the ground, you can see that the designer has very little room to work with.

The trick is to get he oil level far enough from the crank without dragging the oil pan. So how to do this? One could widen the pan or lengthen the sump (dropped part of the pan). It'd be possible to have a high volume pan actually have the oil level below the full mark on the dipstick, because there would be more volume farther away from the crank.

I'd say it's a safe assumption that the oil in the pan should never be higher than the stock "full" mark on a stock dipstick.

If I have a 12 quart drag race pan with a large kickout built in do you think it would have the same level as a stock OEM 402 or 917 4 quart will have work grin shruggy
I can tell you by having used both and running the larger oil pan with less than the stated capacity that the oil levels are not the same as my motors that have used the stock 402 and 917 pans that I added slosh baffles to shruggy

Summit has the 6 qt quality pan $94 so why would you pay more? Summit branding of the Mopar perf pan

Sorry guys, I was wondering about oem pans. Say comparing a 4 qt. and a 6 qt. oem pans on a factory 440.

Here's a cheapo that would work.

That Summit pan won't fit an A body with B/RB engine.

Re: 6 qt Mopar Oil Pan ????? - 08/29/17 05:31 PM

Cab, I would think that it doesn't matter if it is a 5 qt, 20qt or 55 gal pan that you'd want to put as much oil in it as possible, just don't let it contact the rotating assembly. Obviously ground clearance is a concern.

Re: 6 qt Mopar Oil Pan ????? - 08/29/17 05:34 PM

That pan does have baffles in it. And they look about the same as a $240 402 pan. More baffles can be easily added and should be. I just get heartburn when people charge so much for seemingly in-expensive stuff.

Cheers

It will fit in the 1967 to 1976A body cars if you slide the motor back about 1 to 1.5 inches devil scope Mine did in my 1971 Duster with Hooker two inch fenderwell headers and my 400 B block 517 C.I. stroker motor up grin
