jack up rear-end,
place jack stands under rear-end,
remove driveshaft,
remove wheels,
remove drums,
un-bolt axles,
pull axles out about 6 inches(may need a hard pull),
place bucket under the pig,to catch foul smelling fluid,
un-bolt the pig.
pry pig away from housing with small screwdriver.
lower pig to ground,
pig is heavy

jcastle1 - you need to write your own line of shop manuals like Chiltons or Haynes. That was as perfectly written as instructions ever need be for anyone who can work on cars.

THEN...
Step into bucket of gear lube.
Slip and spill contents on shop floor. Bruise head on concrete.
Get gear oil in hair.

Then get gear oil on hands trying to clean it up and discover that you now can TASTE the stuff! Seems to soak through skin or something.

Yeah. Ancient SG lube is a close relative of Skunk juice. Don't ask how many "shampoos" I've taken in that s**t.

Quick addendum for instructions:

Flip the drum around, install lug nuts 2 or 3 turns, drum works as zero-buck slide hammer to pop axles loose.

I still have a couple little bottles of additive if you would like to rekindle that lovely scent!

wear clothes you can trow away...long sleevs, long pants, rubber gloves and after you unbolt it, pry it out and let all the goo drain... I have also pumped the gear oil out via the fill hole, but you will still have plenty left. Then get the jack ready, slide it forward then let it down SLOW, or it will roll off.

Dont forget to have a glass patio table nearby to hold the removed pig.

Also if its a virgin pig, and never been pulled, there may be copper crush washers on under the nuts, this makes removing the pig a bit more difficult.

I'd remove the axle completelly to keep safe the inner oil seal

I try to stay away from it coming out, I just let it hit the concrete on the way out. Then roll it out from under the truck and pick it up with my engine crane. That way I don't get much smelly stuff on me.

When it comes time to go back in I have to use my trans jack.
Jack the back of the truck up and under it goes.

Took it out and put it back in by myself.
Stay out of it's way and you won't get hurt.

You forgot to remove the pinion snubber.
It will make it a little lighter.

I try to leave one nut loose near the top for safety, put a screwdriver somewhere around the sides and just let the fluid drain for a while. I've balanced it in a wide-pad floor jack during removal and installation, but you gotta be very careful trying to balance it and work the floor jack at the same time.

I guess I'm the only guy that likes the smell of gear oil.

Must be something wrong with me....

Anyhow, to add to the advice, leave the top nut in place, but unthreaded to the end of the stud, and pry up on the front of the pig until the seal breaks. This is an easy way to drain the housing without having to worry about the pig falling. The higher you get the back end of the car up the more fluid you'll get out of the housing.

I don't have any pics, but I made a small platform out of wood and mounted it to my floorjack for the "pig" to rest on when your ready to pull it out. Basically it was 3/4" plywood with chocks on the sides to keep the pig from rolling. Worked for me.

All great advise but one more thing.

After you remove the center section check to make sure the thrust spacer is still inside the carrier.

Sometimes they are held in place by a roll pin and when you remove the axles they drop into the housing.

Check now beofore you reinstall your axles and wonder why you have too much end play.

This only applies if you have a clutch type sure grip & your not running green bearings..

Mash fingers and cuss. A sexual reference to your mama is the best.

That hardly seems fair. You're not getting the full experience!
